Germany’s DFB Girls Secure Second Win and Keep Olympic Dreams Alive

2nd game, 2nd win – interim national coach Horst Hrubesch (72) and our DFB girls can continue to dream of the Olympics!

Germany struggled to a 2-0 win in Iceland and is still three points behind Denmark in Nations League Group 3 (2-1 against Wales). Only the first in the table can have hopes of the Olympic Games in Paris next year. On December 1st there will be a showdown against Denmark in Rostock.

But for that to happen, our women’s soccer players have to play much better than in Iceland. Apart from two hits on the crossbar (Schüller/4th and Huth/32nd), not much came together for a long time. But then the opponent helps. In the 63rd minute, Iceland’s goalkeeper Ivarsdottir hits Lea Schüller in the face with her fist as she runs out – penalty! Right-back Giulia Gwinn stays cool and scores from the spot for the third time in a row in the Nations League (65th).

Gwinn on “ZDF”: “I had a good feeling at that moment. It was a cramp. It wasn’t a nice game for us. We don’t get as many chances against other opponents.”

Strong: In the 85th minute, goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger saves against substitute Icelander Zomers.

In the fourth minute of added time the score was 2-0. Ivarsdottir makes another mistake, letting a low shot from Klara Bühl slip through outside the penalty area.

Hrubesch was relieved afterwards, but not satisfied: “We made things difficult for ourselves again. We have so many chances to score. We just don’t have the security. We just have to convert the chances and play better.”

Positive: Germany has the Olympics in its own hands. This requires a win by at least two goals against Denmark and a three-pointer on December 5th in Wales. As group winners we would then go to the semi-finals. Only the two finalists would definitely be there in Paris. Bühl: “I think we can set off fireworks at home.”

And Schüller says: “If we continue to work on ourselves, we will beat Denmark, then Wales, and end up winning the group.”
