A seasoning with spicy oil based on chilli pepper on pizza was fatal for Gerardina Corsano46 years old, who had gone with her husband, Angelo Meninno, 52 years old, having dinner in a restaurant in Ariano Irpino (Avellino), where the couple lived. The two began to feel ill the following Monday, October 30, and went to hospital. There the doctors, having found no serious problems, had them sent home. But the situation degenerated and ultimately there was nothing the woman could do. The 52-year-old Meninno is currently hospitalized, but his life is not in danger. Meanwhile, the Benevento Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation and the police are proceeding with their investigations.

Couple poisoned by botulinum at the restaurant in Ariano Irpino: Gerardina dead at 46, Angelo hospitalized

Ariano Irpino, couple poisoned in restaurant: suspected botulism

Excruciating pain in the abdomen, spasms and vomiting: these are the symptoms experienced by both spouses after returning home from the hospital visit. The terrible pain pushed them to return to the Irpinia hospital again. This time they were rushed to hospital, but despite attempts to resuscitate her, the woman died following her hospitalization. Angelo Meninno is instead hospitalized and kept under observation. According to initial investigations, the cause of the very serious food poisoning could be the presence of botulinum in the condiment. Botulinum is a toxin that can be ingested through contaminated food, and often lurks in artisanal productions in oil. The police from the local police station, directed by the deputy commissioner Licia Salerno, are investigating the episode.

No official news has so far been released by the hospital management, while Gerardina’s family cannot rest: “It’s not possible to die like this.”
