Furious Outburst: Towers Coach Benka Barloschky’s Uncharacteristic Behavior at Basketball Bundesliga Game

The violent outburst of Towers coach Benka Barloschky (35) at the 87:96 defeat of arch-rival Chemnitz Niners in the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga.

The Hamburg player completely lost his composure during his first time out. Barloschky gathers his professionals around him and then says in English: “There is only one thing that can help against their physical style of play: we have to fight through it. That’s really the only thing we can do.”

He gets louder and louder, shouting: “The referees won’t help us. We don’t need your help at all. Fuck, we don’t need their help!”

Then he stands up, approaches the microphone with which broadcaster Dyn is fishing for the sound and shouts: “Fuck them!” Barloschky is actually considered one of the quieter coaches in the BBL!

Towers coach Benka Barloschky explains freakouts

In SPORT BILD he explains his freak out.

Barloschky: “It’s just a very, very heated atmosphere in Chemnitz. It’s crowded, it’s loud. It’s fun, but it’s also perhaps a more aggressive atmosphere than in some other halls. Chemnitz also plays very, very physical basketball. They always push themselves to the limit and put the referees under pressure to make decisions. That’s why it was so exciting from the first second.”

Lukas Meisner (28) was booed mercilessly by the fans. In the first few minutes (6:14), Barloschky did not agree with the decisions of the referee crew around the experienced Carsten Straube (39).

“In the end, as I use and understand it, a time out is a very, very intimate moment between coach and team,” explains Barloschky. “And it’s really just about getting energy into the team and making small tactical changes when necessary. And everything that happens at that moment is a stylistic device to provoke a reaction from the boys.”

The fact that TV viewers are listening in doesn’t influence his choice of words: “If you were to constantly worry about what others think or hear, then you would be more inhibited. At least that’s how I can answer it for myself. I try to stay as authentic as possible and not worry about it. And to speak to the team and reach out to them. That’s the most important.”

He also emphasizes that he is always respectful when speaking directly to referees: “There are no swear words or insults. They are a big part of this game. They have a super difficult job right now in a game in Chemnitz.”

Nevertheless, he does not skimp on criticism: “In the game, they are also required to deliver a top performance. Of course I’ll let you know that too. But it’s nothing personal, it’s about performance. Just as I give feedback to my players, I also give feedback to the referees. And when the game is over, that’s good too. Then I assume that the referees will also watch the video and want to get better.”

Chemitz coach Rodrigo Pastore (51) also complained about the officials at the press conference afterwards: “It was the first time this season that the attention was shifted away from the players during the game…”

Immediately after the final siren, the two coaches clashed because Niners professional Tylor Ongwae (32) first acted as if he was letting time run out – and then surprisingly tried a throw.

Barloschky: “Then it’s actually a gentlemanly agreement between the players that you don’t throw anymore.”

Later, the trainers spoke out in the catacombs. It is still unclear whether the league will punish Barloschky for his outburst. According to information from SPORT BILD, the BBL is looking at the process.
