French Tennis Players End 2023 on Optimistic Note Despite Gloomy Grand Slam Season

In a gloomy context during the Grand Slam tournaments, which remain the real benchmark (or in the Davis Cup, too), French players are still ending the year on a note of optimism.

Seven tournaments have been won this year by a French player: three for Adrian Mannarino(Newport, Astana, Sofia) and four others for Richard Gasquet (Auckland), Arthur Son (Lyon), Gael Monfils (Stockholm) et al Ugo Humbert (Metz). Only the ATP 250, the smallest of the four categories on the calendar, but we’re not going to be choosy: it’s the biggest harvest since 2013 and 2017, the last two seasons with seven French titles (three for Richard Gasquet, two for Nicolas Mahut, one for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and one for Gilles Simon in 2013; four for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and three for Lucas Pouille in 2017).

The nation with the most players in the top 100

We even have to go back to 2008 to find traces of a better year with eight trophies (three for Gilles Simon, two for Michaël Llodra, two for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and one for Fabrice Santoro). There had only been two in 2022, and even just one in 2021. Even in 2008, there had only been one ATP 500 (Michaël Llodra in Rotterdam) and one Masters 1000 (Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Bercy) pinned on the prize list, and exactly the same total of seven ATP 250s in 2013, compared to five ATP 250s and two ATP 500s in 2017 (Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Rotterdam and Pouille in Vienna).

In short, this 2023 vintage has nothing to be ashamed of, except in terms of the ranking with Humbert French n°1 as 20th in the world, however the best at the end of last season was Arthur Rinderknech in 44th place. This is the third year in a row that we have not found any of our representatives among the top 15 ATP, while this did not happen once between 2007 and 2017. On the other hand, France continues to be the nation to place the most players in the top 100, thirteen with Humbert followed by Adrian Mannarino (22nd), Arthur Fils (36th), Luca Van Assche (66eme), Benjamin Bonzi (76th), Gael Monfils (77th), Gasquet (79th), Alexandre Muller (84eme), Gregoire Barrere (85eme), Constant Lestienne (87eme), Rinderknech (93eme) et Quentin Halys (96eme).
