Franz Wagner: Set to Become One of the Highest-Paid German Athletes in History

Franz Wagner is the Orlando Magic’s outstanding player. The German NBA star could soon become one of the highest-paid German athletes of all time.

Franz Wagner once again proved that he is one of the top players in the NBA in the 124:119 win against the reigning champion Denver Nuggets (live every Saturday and Sunday on ProSieben MAXX and ran.de).

This could soon also pay off financially. According to a report by “Sport Bild”, the 22-year-old has a contract worth the equivalent of around 230 million euros.

His four-year contract, worth a total of around 21.3 million euros, expires next season. Orlando is likely to be very interested in offering Wagner an extension starting from the 2025/2026 season.

A new contract usually runs for four years, but for top players it can sometimes last for five years. Each franchise can designate two players to receive longer contracts. In Orlando this should be the young Wagner and the 21-year-old Paolo Banchero.

The salary is based on the salary cap. 25 percent of the salary cap is the maximum amount for a single player. Wagner could conclude his new contract at exactly the right time, as the current TV contract in the USA ends after the 2024/2025 season.

The most important thing about the NBA

NBA expects increasing TV revenues

The NBA expects a high increase in revenue for the following rights period. While the equivalent of around 2.5 billion euros is currently being collected per season, over the next eleven years the average is expected to be 6.39 billion euros (a total of 70.2 billion).

Because the NBA teams split their income equally with the players, the salary cap would rise significantly and, according to some experts, could then amount to the equivalent of around 159 million euros per team.

Wagner could pocket a quarter of that, as mentioned. His starting salary would then be around 39.75 million euros per year from the 2025/2026 season. In the years that followed, salaries of 42.93 million euros, 46.11 million euros, 49.29 million euros and 52.47 million euros would follow. This would result in a total of 230.55 million euros.

Wagner would earn as much within five years as Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki did in his entire career.
