The Italian Free Wrestling Cup reserved for U17 and Over 17 athletes took place last Friday and Saturday, 25 and 26 November, in Martina Franca, in the province of Taranto: and precisely in the Over 17, weight category -92 kg, the Fortitudo 1903 of Reggio Calabria won a prestigious silver medal with the athlete Iurie Ravliuc.
The competition of the Calabrian of Moldovan origin, a student at the Mediterranean University, who practices Free Wrestling, Judo and Karate, was tactically perfect, with great determination he reached the final beating the athletes Francesco Gorgone and Mirko De Nichilo. In the final, broadcast live, Iurie Ravliuc lost to the strong athlete of Russian origin Andrei Petris Bog Dan who won the gold medal.
Francesco Gatto and Gabriele Nicoletti, the other Fortitudo athletes, competing in the 61 kg category, in their first experience at this level, ranked fifth and seventh respectively.
The sum of the scores achieved by the athletes of Fortitudo 1903 allowed the Reggio club to rank eighth in the general ranking, surpassing the renowned Fiamme Oro and Vigili del Fuoco Pisa.
The President of Fortitudo, Riccardo Partinico, was very satisfied and commented: “the development project of Free Wrestling in Calabria is proceeding in the best possible way. In the previous race two very young athletes from Reggio, Angelo Chirico and Carmelo Montesano, won the title of Italian champion and vice-champion of Italy in the Beginners class. Today, the Fortitudo seniors also competed at very high levels. The technical consultancy offered by Olimpico Giovanni Schillaci, the collaboration of the Technical Teacher Gabriele Mallamace, doctor in Motor and Sports Sciences and the programs of the owner technician have borne fruit”.
The next commitment for the wrestlers from Reggio will be the U20 and Senior Italian Open scheduled in Ostia Lido on December 16th.
