Former national coach Steffi Jones (50) speaks openly in an interview with “Spiegel” about major financial worries in her past – and how football saved her.

In the interview, Jones reveals significant money problems: “My mother worked day and night, she had three jobs: she worked in a bank, waited tables and cleaned. Still, we couldn’t afford a lot of things. I started delivering newspapers when I was 13, and when I was 16 I also went cleaning in my stepfather’s restaurant.”
Particularly tragic: her brother used a lot of the money he earned to finance his drug addiction.
When she was 19, Jones says she thought about giving up: “I was so devastated that I sat in the car and thought about whether I should drive into the wall.”

Dramatic debt confession from Steffi Jones
Then the debt confession: “We had planned to make a dream come true: My mother, her partner and I wanted to build a house, so we took out a loan. Then the cellar builder went bankrupt, we got into a huge legal dispute with the neighbors, and things went completely wrong. In the end we had 500,000 euros in debt.”
She was completely desperate at the time and says today: “I thought I would never get out of there.”
She only started earning well in 2008, when she became president of the organizing committee for the 2011 Women’s World Cup.
But she only got rid of the debt later – thanks to her wife Nicole. She comes from banking and helped her so much.
Jones became national coach in 2016 and was fired two years later. Reason: The disappointing quarter-final exit at the 2017 European Championships.

Jones now works as a managing director in her wife Nicole’s IT company – and has a large property in Gelsenkirchen-Buer where the couple lives – together with mother Jones.
