The 46-year-old received the devastating diagnosis of blood poisoning a few weeks ago. In addition, an autoimmune disease causes heart and kidney failure. In order to survive, Scott requires dialysis and chemotherapy. But because the American now lives back in his home country, he has to pay the costs in the US healthcare system himself.

In order to be able to pay the bills, his German wife Angelika, whom he met during his second time in Ludwigsburg, recently launched an emotional appeal for donations. “It is very difficult for me to share our situation, but I have reached a point where I must put my pride aside because we have no other choice,” the appeal said.

Angelika then describes her husband’s extensive medical history and the expensive treatment methods. “This diagnosis (autoimmune disease) has led to a grueling treatment plan, including dialysis, chemotherapy and other therapies that place extreme stress on his body. It looks like he will be on dialysis forever and may even need a kidney transplant,” they said.

The associated costs are probably in the thousands. “The financial situation is extremely difficult, with increasing medical bills and other expenses.” Therefore, her family needs “essential support to cope with this difficult journey,” writes Deutsche. “I am so incredibly proud of him, how strong he is and how he fights, but it breaks my heart not to know what will happen next,” the ex-basketball player’s wife gives emotional insights into her emotional world.

Former basketball player seriously ill – willingness to donate declines

The fundraising campaign, which started in mid-October, initially got off to a very good start. The original fundraising goal of almost $10,000 was reached on the first day. Scott’s former club Ludwigsburg had also announced support. “We do not forget deserving players like Gordon Scott, especially when they are in a difficult situation,” said President Alexander Reil. The fans of the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg even unrolled a poster in the game against Bonn with the message “Stay strong, Gordon!”

After this high level of willingness to donate, Angelika Scott was touched. “When Gordon heard about the flood of well-wishes, messages and contributions, he almost couldn’t believe it emotionally. Your combined love has shown him that he is valued and loved more than he could ever imagine,” she said.

Since then, however, the willingness to donate has declined sharply. The fundraising goal is now $50,000, and almost $14,000 had been received by October 31st. It is hoped that Gordon Scott and his family can raise enough funds to pay for his treatment. (luha)
