Football: Henri Stambouli, former coach of Marseille and Sedan, has died

Then assistant to Belgian coach Raymond Goethals, he won the Champions League with OM against AC Milan on May 26, 1993 (1-0). Henri Stambouli, 62, died this Friday in Dakar, where he was staying with his relatives, following a mesenteric thrombosis, we learned from his family.

The father of Benjamin Stambouli, the former PSG midfielder now at Adana Demirspor who moreover saluted his memory, had two clubs as a goalkeeper. He trained in Monaco before joining Marseille where he notably played in a semi-final return of the Coupe des Coupes in 1988 against Ajax, replacing Joseph Antoine Bell (2-1).

With his coaching diplomas in hand, the son-in-law of Gérard Banide, former coach of Monaco, OM and PSG, was first in charge of the OM reserve team, in the 3rd division, where this trainer in the soul, meticulous and great professional, favored the blossoming of Alain Boghossian, the 1998 world champion.

He was then the assistant to Raymond Goethals, then to Marc Bourrier in D1 before being promoted to number 1 coach of the Marseille club, relegated to D2 as part of the VA-OM affair, from December 1994 to September 1995 with a title of French D2 champion in the spring of 1995. After his departure from Marseille, he was stationed, notably, in Sion, Sedan and Istres.

What followed was a career rich in emotions, always placing people at the forefront. Taking charge of the Guinea team, Mali where he reached the semi-finals of the CAN in 2004, then Togo will remain important moments in his career. He also led FAR Rabat to the final of the African Confederation Cup in 2006.

Assistant to Laurent Banide, his brother-in-law, in Monaco in 2007, his great quality of transmission will lead him to take care of the training centers in Marseille from August 2010 to June 2013, then in Montpellier until June 2018 where he will help develop the qualities of many players.
