Fiorentina-Bologna: 50 years of ultras in Florence

Almost 30,000 spectators attended this match between Fiorentina and Bologna, the so-called Derby dell’Appeninowhich always has its charm both in terms of actual sporting rivalry and for all the many pasts between the ultras of the two squares, central not only geographically but also in the history of organized support in Italy.

Speaking of history, tonight we celebrate the notable milestone of 50 years of ultras life in Florence, summarized with a choreography staged at the same time as the players enter the pitch and which, in a curve cover that completes the beautiful mosaic of cards, depicts the three generations within the Fiesole curve: an ultras in camouflage typical of the years of youth protest and the “Ultras 1973” scarf around his neck, his counterpart from the 80s and 90s, orange bomber jacket, segmented hat and “Ultras 1973” scarf CAV” and finally a fan with a more up-to-date figure, close to casual in style but with the unmistakable logo of the OneNineTwoSix on a bucket hat. No direct, recognizable or iconic references in the faces of the three other than those of the “dress code” which has always been part of being ultras and in a broader sense a single common thread that has linked the lily fans since that distant 1973.

When the purple and white cards in the background, to highlight the number 50, are slowly lowered, many flags rise, replicating the same choreographic show as before, but giving it even greater liveliness and eye-catching with the movement of the flags.

For the rest, the home corner is always active with flags, some smoke bombs but also many banners displayed during the match: in favor of the volunteers involved in the area due to the recent flood, one particularly applauded for the anniversary of Gabriele Sandri’s death, then still others in favor of captain Biraghi, against the Juventus rivals and such a succession of other messages that it seemed like we had really gone back to the happy times evoked at the start of the match.

As for Bologna, the guest sector sold out in a few hours and there was no small disappointment among the many who were left out of the race for the few available tickets. There are officially 2,314 attendances in the so-called “cheese”, with a few more hundred fans scattered in other sectors. Most of them reach the Tuscan capital by their own means to which are added at least ten coaches with all due respect to the good old train that took you to Campo di Marte, a five minute walk from the stadium and a host of memories and anecdotes.

The people of Bologna also strike with a very beautiful banner to incite, despite the rivalry, all the Tuscan people not to give up in these difficult moments following the recent flood. Unlike usual, the flags with the banners of the most important groups remain in the lower part while the cheering is quite intense, without obviously lacking offensive chants and banners as per the consolidated tradition of this heartfelt match.

Fiorentina on the pitch wins 2-1 with the Fiesole who obviously celebrates with the team anthem in the background which perhaps dampens the spontaneity and enthusiasm a little. The queue of the match was much longer for the Bolognese who were held back inside the stadium for a very long time Franks until the streets are emptied and they are left free to return home.
