FC Utrecht escaped a home defeat against Excelsior on Sunday. The team of coach Ron Jans grabbed a point at the last minute in Galgenwaard Stadium: 2-2.

After a goalless first half (Troy Parrott hit the post on behalf of Excelsior), the visitors took the lead after half-time thanks to Couhaib Driouech. After just over an hour, Lazaros Lamprou scored the 0-2 with a header.

The match seemed to be over, but ten minutes later Utrecht midfielder Can Bozdogan scored the tying goal with a shot in the crossbar. The pressure from the home club increased and that resulted in extra time – when goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas also went forward – in defender Modibo Sagnan’s equalizer. He scored with his head.

After a dramatic start to the season, FC Utrecht seems to be on the mend. The last four matches resulted in three draws and one win. As number sixteen in the Eredivisie, the concerns for the club from the cathedral city remain great.

The situation is a lot brighter for Excelsior. The Rotterdam team is number seven in the rankings behind PSV, Feyenoord, FC Twente, AZ, Go Ahead Eagles and Sparta Rotterdam.

In the first round after the upcoming international match, FC Utrecht will visit Sparta. Excelsior will then play the city derby against Feyenoord at home.
