FC Saarbrücken Stuns Bayern Munich in German Cup Upset; Bayer Leverkusen Survives Tough Battle

What a storm! Bayern Munich was eliminated in added time by FC Saarbrücken (2-1) in the 2nd round of the German Cup. The small German third division club, initially trailing, managed to overthrow the Bavarian ogre. Thomas Tuchel’s men have not won the trophy since 2020.

It was the entire Ludwigspark in Saarbrücken, close to the French border, which exploded on Marcel Gaus’ goal (90th + 5) after a final counter-attack. Before that, the 15th in the German third division had managed to equalize just before the break (45th+1) in a match where Manuel Neuer’s teammates had taken control quite early thanks to Thomas Müller (16th)

And yet, Thomas Tuchel had lined up men of confidence, to take the match seriously (Müller, Sané, Kimmich, Tel…). And it could have been heavy for FC Saarbrücken quickly led by a superb strike from Thomas Müller, but not defeated. After managing to equalize on a poor restart from Munich, the entire stadium pushed to resist.

Müller came close to the double, Coman saw his shot deflected by the opposing goalkeeper. And the White and Blue launched a final victorious counterattack. For Bayern, it is yet another disappointment in the German Cup where the club has not even reached a final since 2020. Second in the Bundesliga, the Bavarians caused a sensation this weekend by extinguishing Darmstadt (8-0) . This Thursday evening, Thomas Tuchel’s men caused a sensation… with their early elimination.

Bayer Leverkusen qualified in pain

Bayer Leverkusen had to work hard to qualify for the round of 16 of the German Cup by defeating Sandhausen 5-2 on Wednesday evening on the lawn of the 3rd division resident. Xabi Alonso’s men led the score through Exequiel Palacios (21st) and Jonathan Tah (54th), but Sandhausen equalized through Christoph Erlich (50th) and Yassin Ben Balla (57th). Adam Hlozek allowed Leverkusen to take control for a third time in the 85th minute, before Amine Adli, who had caused the penalty converted by Palacios, scored twice at the end of the match (88th and 90th +2).
