FC Bayern’s Defensive Woes: A Close Call in 1. FC Cologne Game

The game at 1. FC Cologne not only begins offensively for FC Bayern – but also with a very unpleasant scene for a Munich professional.

FC Bayern and the short squad – the German record champions are notoriously short on defense this season. To the chagrin of coach Thomas Tuchel, who had vehemently called for reinforcements. The fear about the multiple strain on the Bayern stars: At some point, one of the defensive players could get more seriously injured. This season, Leon Goretzka, Noussair Mazraoui and Konrad Laimer have already had to help out as central defenders due to the short-term absences of Dayot Upamecano or Matthijs de Ligt, and there are hardly any alternatives in the wing positions either.

And in the game at 1. FC Cologne, those in charge at Munich will be terrified. Because after almost a quarter of an hour there was a moment of shock involving a defender.

The 14th minute in Cologne’s Rhein-Energie-Stadion: Min-Jae Kim goes into a header duel against Cologne’s Davie Selke in his own half – but then loses his balance and hits the grass with his left side quite unhappily and remains lying with his face distorted in pain. His left arm and hip in particular seem to be affected. The Bayern staff immediately storm onto the pitch. Kim initially shakes his head, apparently in severe pain.

Tuchel can be seen on the touchline with a worried expression. But after a short break from treatment, the South Korean gets up again and struggles to the sideline. Then it becomes clear: the 27-year-old can carry on. And Tuchel has one less thing to worry about.

Kim moved from the Italian champions SSC Napoli to Munich in the summer for 50 million euros and has appeared in all Bundesliga players so far this season.
