Harry Kane breaks the oldest record in Bundesliga history

Do you still know Klaus Matischak? Schalke set a goal record in the first Bundesliga season in 1963. It lasted until Saturday evening. Bayern Munich’s top striker Harry Kane surpassed the 60-year-old mark in the top game against Dortmund and set further records.
The fact that the record meant nothing to Harry Kane, if he even knew about it, became clear in the 70th minute of the top game. FC Bayern’s top striker appeared completely free in front of Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. He could actually choose the corner, but preferred to pass the ball across to Jamal Musiala, who then scored into the empty goal.
The goal that made it 3-0 in the top game at BVB was not recognized because Kane was just offside, but the scene once again underlined the teamwork with which the Englishman performs his duties in opposing penalty areas.
With the goal he could have broken the oldest existing Bundesliga record. Schalke’s Klaus Matischak scored 15 goals in his debut season in 1963/64. A record that has stood for all these decades. No other player achieved this value in his first ten appearances. Kane was only able to make it 2-0 with his goal in the 9th minute.

However, the 85-year-old Matischak, who has lived in New York for nine years, still had to give up his record. Just two minutes after the offside decision, Kane made it 3-0 before completing his hat-trick in added time to make the final score 4-0.

Kane also overtook Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy at the top of the Bundesliga’s top scorer list and now has 15 goals this season after ten games – another record that he only shares with Bayern legend Gerd Müller. The “Bomber” scored 15 goals on the first ten matchdays of the 1968/69 season.

“It’s just the experience. Of course, he didn’t leave all the processes and actions that he experienced in his career in England. He shows it week after week. We are so happy that we have him in our team,” praised Manuel Neuer, FC Bayern’s striker. With the new addition to the starting line-up, Munich didn’t lose a competitive game. In the defeats in Saarbrücken (Cup) and against RB Leipzig (Supercup) he was not used at all or only late.

There are no signs of the series ending. Kane has had at least one goal involvement in seven games now. In total, he will have 20 scorer points in the Bundesliga alone in 2023/24 (15 goals, five assists) – that is of course also a record. Since goal assists were recorded in 1992, there has never been a player with so many goals after ten match days.

And the people of Dortmund know that better than anyone else. In his five competitive games against BVB, Harry Kane scored seven goals, four for Tottenham and three for Bayern. He doesn’t score as confidently against any other non-English club.
