Fantasy Football Trade Targets for Week 9: Who to Buy and Sell in the 2023 NFL Season

Kicking off another week in the 2023 NFL season and our “game within the game”. Eight rounds have already passed and now in week 9 the GMs will not be able to count on players from the Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars, who are in the bye, to roster their squads,

After a trade deadline without many movements within the league, the exchanges within Fantasy Football remain “firm and strong” and could be the determining factor in their success in reaching the long-awaited playoffs.

Therefore, it is always important to remain alert in the player market to take advantage of opportunities to “buy” athletes who are not going through a good moment or sell others who are on the rise, but who are expected to experience a certain drop in performance along the way.

To help you in this mission, your great companion The Playoffs is here once again to identify the best “buy” or “sell” targets based on the most recent performance(s) of the listed names.

Remembering once again that our names are based on PPR (points per reception) leagues, which is the most popular rule among Fantasy Football players.

With that said and without further ado, let’s get to the trade targets for Week 9 of the 2023 NFL season!

Running backs to “buy low”:

Jonathan Taylor (IND)

Jonathan Taylor’s life is not easy this year. With the exception of week 7, the Indianapolis Colts running back did not reach 15 fantasy points in the other three duels he played. In Week 8, against the Saints, he had 12 carries for 95 yards and just one measly reception for two yards. On the other hand, his backfield partner Zack Moss continues to deliver more fantasy points than him and has been “the guy” for touchdowns within the team. However, we know Taylor’s immense ability and the idea is that it’s only a matter of time before he dominates the backfield once and for all. Good time to bet on the player.

Aaron Jones (GB)

Another game well below Aaron Jones and the most worrying, with few carries and numbers below those of AJ Dillon. To make matters worse, the Packers’ RB had limited participation in training this Wednesday (1) due to a thigh injury. In the Week 8 game against the Vikings, Jones rushed seven times for 29 yards and had four receptions for 17 yards, numbers well below what we are used to for one of the dominant RBs in the league. Chance to try to buy him for your team and bet on a recovery for the athlete, who has talent to spare.

Other RBs to “buy low”: Bijan Robinson (ATL), Brian Robinson (WAS), Rhamondre Stevenson (NE), Tony Pollard (DAL)

Running backs to “sell high”:

Jahmyr Gibbs (DET)

Jahmyr Gibbs finally emerged for the Lions offense and the NFL. With the injury of starter David Montgomery, Gibbs took over the position and had two high-level performances in weeks 7 and 8, where he “bordered” 30 points in the “game within the game” in both matches. Against the Raiders there were 26 carries for 152 yards (his record so far) and a rushing TD, with another five receptions for 37 yards. With the Lions in bye week, everything suggests that Montgomery could return to the team in week 10, meaning that Gibbs’ production could drop. It is possible to exchange the Lions’ RB for big names after two great performances.

Gus Edwards (BAL)

Edwards is coming off two stellar performances and appears to be establishing himself within the Ravens’ backfield. Against the Arizona Cardinals, Gus rushed for an incredible three touchdowns and had 80 rushing yards, reaching 29.4 Fantasy points, slightly higher than the 21.4 achieved in Week 7 against the Lions. However, it is not possible to say that Edwards will be able to maintain his high production, especially since he plays on a team that likes to throw the ball and has a quarterback in Lamar Jackson who is a great runner. In other words, an opportunity to take advantage of the two great performances to sell the player.

Other RBs to “sell high”: Rashad White (TB), Kareem Hunt (CLE), Cam Akers (MIN)

Wide receivers to “buy low”:

Cooper Coup (LAR)

After returning from injury in week 5 and performing masterfully in week 6, Cooper Kupp had a sudden drop in production in weeks 7 and 8, not even reaching 10 points. There were six combined receptions for the Rams’ WR in the two games, very low numbers for a player of Kupp’s caliber. The Rams are not doing well, Stafford has become a doubt with a problem in his hand and the scenario for the Los Angeles team is not the best. With all this, Kupp has seen a drop in his “value”, but he remains one of the best in the position. Good chance to try a deal for him.

Tee Higgins (CIN)

Tee Higgins has been having a year well below previous ones. If at the beginning of the year many blamed Joe Burrow’s injury to justify the low production of the Bengals’ attack, now that the QB seems to be recovered and Ja’Marr Chase is once again performing with the quality we know he has, the situation from Higgins is a little different. Cincinnati’s WR2 only scored two TDs this year, both in Week 2 against the Ravens, and only surpassed 10 Fantasy points last week. GMs who have Higgins on the team may be more likely to trade him. Take advantage of paying a lower price for a great player.

Other WRs to “buy low”: Amari Cooper (CLE), D.K. Metcalf (SEA), Brandon Aiyuk (SF), Justin Jefferson (MIN)

Wide receivers to “sell high”:

Gabe Davis (BUF)

Alternating some exceptional games with some very bad ones, our Gabe Davis, the popular “Kingnaldo”, shone in week 8 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with nine receptions for 87 yards and a TD. However, the alternation of good performances means that Davis is not such a reliable WR to remain on his team. Time to take advantage of the excellent performance of the last game to try to trade the player for names that arrive with more consistency in your squad.

Rashid Shaheed (NO)

Competing in the Saints squad against the excellent Chris Olave and Michael Thomas, Rashid Shaheed has performed very well so far. If we look at Week 8, New Orleans’ WR3 only had three receptions, but it was 153 yards for him with one TD. Being “the guy” for big plays within the team, the player has been gaining more and more space in the attack led by Derek Carr and we can already say that he is a very interesting option. However, due to the last three good games – two of which are great – the tip is to try to “sell” the player to a name with more impact.

Other WRs to “sell high”: Courtland Sutton (DEN), Jordan Addison (MIN), Diontae Johnson (PIT), Tyler Lockett (SEA)

Tight ends to “buy low”:

Mark Andrews (BAL)

It’s difficult to put the 2nd TE that scored the most so far on the “buy low” list. But Mark Andrews is playing below what he can produce and his number of receptions has dropped considerably compared to recent years, mainly due to the high production of rookie wide receiver Zay Flowers who is shining for the Ravens. In Week 8 Andrews caught four passes for 40 yards, but scored a TD that took his fantasy points to 14. The Baltimore TE’s great performances appear when he scores touchdowns, but when he passes, his score drops. Good arguments to try to convince a rival to sell it to you!

Other TEs to “buy low”: Dalton Schultz (HOU), Dallas Goedert (PHI)

Tight ends to “sell high”:

Trey McBride (ARI)

After Zach Ertz’s injury, Trey McBride became one of the pleasant surprises of the Arizona Cardinals and the entire league. In the game against the Ravens in Week 8 he scored 25.5 points and had an incredible ten receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown. However, the Cards traded QB Joshua Dobbs to the Vikings and the TE and QB connection showed promise. The team should bet on the recently recovered Kyler Muray from injury for the rest of the season and we know that Murray is very good, but it remains to be seen how he will return from injury. The Cardinals’ attack is also far from enchanting, so McBride’s good production could yield good things for whoever has him on the squad.

Other TEs to “sell high”: David Njoku (CLE), Jake Ferguson (DAL)

Quarterbacks to “buy low”:

Patrick Mahomes (KC)

Mahomes? Is he serious? Yes! We have to take advantage of the rare absences of one of the best quarterbacks in the entire league to mention him. Mahomes had perhaps one of the worst performances of his career against the Denver Broncos last week, scoring just 7.64 fantasy points and throwing two interceptions and no TDs in the Chiefs’ surprising defeat at Colorado. It’s okay that Mahomes had the flu, far from being 100% physically fit, but how about taking advantage of this bad performance to try to bring the player to your squad? We will hardly have the chance to see him down again anytime soon. The opportunity may be unique.

Other QBs to “buy low”: Trevor Lawrence (JAX), Jared Goff (DET), Lamar Jackson (BAL)

Quarterbacks to “sell high”:

Derek Carr (NO)

To the surprise of many, Carr had very good performances in the last three or even four games. Today’s duel is against the Chicago Bears and the chance for another good game for the Saints’ QB against the 5th team that allows the most points to quarterbacks. With Carr on the rise and having surpassed 15 points in the last four weeks and surpassing 18 in the last two games, there is a good opportunity to try a trade using the player. It’s worth remembering that in week 10 names like Mahomes and Jalen Hurts will be on bye week and some GMs may need a “spare” QB.

Other QBs to “sell high”: Sam Howell (WSH), Dak Prescott (DAL), Will Levis (TIT), Derek Carr (NO)
