Bergwijn happy and relieved: ‘Everyone wants to fight for Van ‘t Schip’

It was a big contrast to previous matches. Ajax captain Steven Bergwijn stood smiling in front of the NOS camera afterwards: “I am happy with the victory, relieved. The pressure was on, because we had not won for so long.”

“Everyone wants to fight for him,” Bergwijn said about the brand new coach. “One hundred percent. He is in a difficult period and if you do this, it is fantastic. As a team, everyone wants to go the extra mile.”

Van ‘t Schip: ‘It’s nice that Bergwijn is willing to do that for me’

Bergwijn’s words reached Van ‘t Schip. “The fact that he would do that for me touches me,” said the interim coach. “Nice to hear and it was also visible.”

Bergwijn also praised Van ‘t Schip’s approach in his first days as interim coach of Ajax. “He has expressed a clear plan,” said the attacker, who scored the first goal against Volendam.

“We have indicated some things and tried to provide more certainty and clarity,” Van ‘t Schip explained. “It is logical that this will not all happen immediately. But what we have seen is a nice step. It is a relief for me, the team and the fans.”
