English Football Association Opens Proceedings Against Sandro Tonali for Betting Scandal

The English Football Association (FA) has opened proceedings against Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, who was involved in a betting scandal. According to the Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, citing statements from Newcastle’s sporting director Dan Ashworth, an investigation should be carried out into whether the Italian international player, who has already been banned for ten months, also bet on his club’s games.

“Our first thought is to protect our player, he is part of our family,” said Ashworth: “We wanted to understand exactly what had happened and work transparently with the authorities. Sandro also wanted to do that from the start.”

Last week, the Italian football association FIGC announced Tonali’s ban and the FA’s investigation could result in an additional penalty. The 23-year-old will already miss the rest of the season and also the European Championships in Germany if defending champions Italy qualify. In addition, Tonali must undergo at least six months of therapy to combat his gambling addiction.
