Emma Hayes becomes new coach of the United States women’s team

Emma Hayes was named coach of the United States women’s team on Tuesday. The 47-year-old English technician will first finish the 2023-2024 season with the Chelsea players, then she will officially join the American team two months before the start of the 2024 Olympic Games.

She will then have four matches to manage before the start of the Paris Olympics, two in June and two in July. In the meantime, Twila Kilgore, the interim head coach, will continue in her role and will then become the assistant to the current Chelsea coach for eleven seasons.

“It’s a huge honor to have the opportunity to coach the most incredible team in the history of world football,” said Emma Hayes. The feelings and bonds that unite me with this team and this country are deep. It’s been a dream of mine to coach the United States for a long time, so this opportunity is a dream come true. »

Hayes was appointed manager of the Blues in August 2012 and has won six Women’s Super League titles, one WSL Spring Series title, five Women’s FA Cups and two FA Women’s League Cups. Chelsea also reached the Women’s Champions League final in 2021. She was named to The Best FIFA Women’s Coach of the Year in 2021 and is a finalist for the same award this year.

Emma Hayes therefore becomes the second coach born in England to lead the United States women’s team, after Jill Ellis.
