E-MTB Lapierre GLP: the spirit of three generations

The Gravity Logic Project program, from which the Lapierre GLP E-MTB was derived, was born from a desire to do things differently, to break the mold and demonstrate the capacity for innovation in the MTB world through design.
The idea of repositioning the masses lower than all the competitors has given rise to an unrivaled bike, now in its third generation.

Said Nicolas Vouilloz: “Our tests, performed with power meters to parameterize the rider’s output, provided our engineers with all the useful information to best position the UD SLI carbon layup and the bike’s geometries to make it possible obtain an autonomy of more than 1800 m of D+ with a single battery, that is 800 m of D+ more than the old version.”

E-MTB Lapierre GLP: more battery, unique and specific design

Despite the 50% increase in battery capacity, the desire was to maintain the specific and unique design of the GLP for rapid visual identification, thanks to the positioning of the external battery.

With the evolution of e-bike riding techniques and the specific needs of athletes, the GLP III has become increasingly oriented towards the Enduro segment, pure performance for competitions.

100% Enduro

From 140mm of suspension travel in 2017, the 3rd generation GLP now offers 170mm of front and rear travel, ideal for competing at the highest levels in racing and tackling bike park trails. Thanks to a longer shock stroke (65 vs 60 mm) and the specific asymmetric design of the frame, the frame is now completely redesigned to maximize performance in extreme use.

Light and responsive but robust and rigid

To achieve this, the new GLP III is built with the best UD SLI carbon technology. Reinforced with IM/VHM fiber to maintain rigidity and dynamism, the weight of the bare frame is only 3.3 kg (size M).

Increased use of unidirectional IM and VHM carbon fibers, a new simplified design using a single two-part mold around the engine/battery block, and the adoption of rigid mandrel technology provide a better finish both external and internal.
The new chassis design also focuses on engine block cooling, with increased ventilation and redirection of air to the engine, to improve performance.

While the frame is 100% UD SLI carbon, the new connecting rod and shock link are made of aluminum alloy to guarantee more solid and precise threads.

Advanced kinematics

Even with 29/27.5 mullet wheels, the GLP III project was created to be perfectly balanced in terms of suspension between the front and rear wheels. To achieve this, the geometry has been adapted for single-crown fork lengths with 170mm of travel.

The work focused mainly on the rear shock absorber and its anchoring points. Specified at 205x65mm (up from 60mm), the GLP III chassis is now compatible with all types of shock absorbers on the market, both air and spring.

The additional 5mm of travel length offers 173mm of real rear wheel travel. An 8% gain compared to the previous generation. .

Race-ready integration and design solutions

True to its basic concept, the GLP III’s battery remains external and always easily removable.

The GLP III goes a step further in terms of integration, with the Bosch KIOX display drowned in the top tube and the HMI control integrated just above the battery.

The cables and tubes are also better integrated, with a passage in the headset for even cleaner lines of the bike. This internal passage does not prevent the use of a headset with a 150° lock.

However and since it was also developed for UCI competitions, the frame is “Race Ready Routing”, with the brake and gear lines routed laterally to the head tube.

Finally, the fully guided steps within the frame make the system silent and vibration-free, for an optimal driving experience.

Mullet configuration, not just for the look

Many of today’s e-bikes have lost rideability due to increasingly larger batteries. The proverbial playfulness and liveliness for which the GLP has always been known remain unchanged on this new version without sacrificing autonomy.

A geometry that preserved impeccable stability at the front and playfulness at the rear was the fundamental design requirement and so the GLP features advanced geometric dimensions to maintain the mullet solution and increase the ability to tackle even more challenging trails.

These 2 essential elements have been retained to ensure the new GLP III remains lively and responsive on technical uphill and downhill sections.

Chainstay length reduced to 440mm for technical maneuverability (with a maximum tire section of 2.8)

“Mullet” combination: the differentiated wheel setup of the GLP III reinforces the playfulness of the rear wheel in hairpin bends, while the high rolling characteristics of the front wheel make it easier to overcome obstacles.

Better climbing performance

To improve uphill performance without losing downhill quality, a series of small adjustments had to be made to ensure the rider was perfectly balanced and at the “heart” of the bike. This translates to:

1 – A straighter seat tube angle of 77° (+1°), in line with the Enduro trend. The rider position is now more forward, which helps refocus the center of gravity and reduce the pitching effect of the short chainstays.

2 – Headset angle changed to 64° (-1°) on all sizes to accommodate 170mm forks

– Shorter tube top on sizes M/L/XL, but longer reach on all sizes.

– A more inclined horizontal tube and a shorter vertical tube (-3 cm on average) to further reorient the center of gravity.

Engine – battery integration

Faithful to the GLP philosophy, the Bosch Powerpack external battery remains easily removable. The new PowerPack battery has a capacity of 725 Wh. With 45% more energy (compared to GLP2), it is also 50% heavier (+1.3kg). Distribution in the center of the bike and at the lowest point.

The inclination of the battery takes into account its new dimensions, so that the weight is always perfectly distributed in the center of the bike. This is why the front part of the motor has been slightly raised around the axis of the bottom bracket, in order to lower the rear part of the battery as much as possible and reduce the space between battery and motor.

These changes to the position of the engine/battery block therefore rebalance the mass which, combined with the new geometry, makes it easier to tackle technical climbs, while at the same time giving a sensation of lightness unique for an E-MTB.

Engine performance and control system

The performance and intelligence of the engine fit perfectly with the philosophy and racing spirit of the GLP III.

The new limited series of the Bosch Performance Line CX Race engine (installed on Team and SE models) generates even more support thanks to the «Race» mode.

Although it consumes slightly more energy than the Turbo mode of the Performance CX engine (Elite model), it has another advantage: it features the Extended Boost mode, which provides maximum power for a longer period of time allowing for incredible ability to overcome obstacles .

The CX Race engine also features an intelligent anti-kickback mode and a gear shift detection mode to adapt power while driving.

Its reduced weight (2.75 kg) and torque of 85 Nm, with a peak output of 600 watts at maximum power (400% vs. 340% of the Performance CX), make the new CX Race the point of reference for competitive use.

Bosch App

Controlling the engine characteristics of your GLP III has never been easier, thanks to the connectivity of the Bosch eBike Flow application and the KIOX console*.

Choose and set modes, adjust power, modulate responsiveness: everything becomes interactive, allowing you to optimize engine performance based on your driving style.

GLP III models come with Race, Turbo, eMTB, Turbo and Off (automatic) modes.
