Dominic Thiem can already plan safely for the exhibition events.

Dominic Thiem still has to worry about another week of the tournament before the final world rankings for the 2023 season are published, which will determine the direct starter places for the main field of the Australian Open. The Lichtenwörther native is currently in 97th place in the live ranking, so direct participation in the main competition should be possible without having to rely on a wildcard from the organizers.

Start at the Kooyong Classic

That the former world number 3. is already planning to do so, as demonstrated by the announced participation in the Kooyong Classic, which takes place during the qualifying week for the first major of the season. The traditional exhibition event, which has been held at the venerable Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club since the Grand Slam tournament moved to what was then Flinders Park, now Melbourne Park, in 1988, serves as a way for many top players to prepare for the first highlight of the season . The first editions of the tournament were held on grass, including in 1993, when Thomas Muster secured the title in the Kooyong district of Melbourne. Since 1995, the game has been played on the same surface that is used at the Australian Open.

In addition to Thiem, the two top 10 players Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune have already been announced as participants. Former Paris Masters champion Karen Khachanov and Zhang ZhiZhen, who became the first Chinese to break into the top 100 of the men’s world rankings, will also serve at the event from January 10th to 12th, 2024.

Participation in the UTS event in Oslo

Participation in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Oslo was announced as another start for the 30-year-old at an exhibition event. This will take place from February 8th to 11th, 2024 following the Davis Cup weekend, in which Austria will compete in the play-offs for World Group I in Ireland. In the Norwegian capital, the Lower Austrian will compete with the northern lights Casper Ruud and Holger Rune, as well as Andrey Rublev, Gael Monfils and Alexander Bublik.
