Djokovic can’t rest: “Great bitterness, difficult to accept. I didn’t read Sinner’s serve”

After Lorenzo Musetti’s defeat against Miomir Kecmanovic, Italy would have qualified for the final of Davis Cup I only know Jannik Sinner had passed Novak Djokovic first in singles and then in doubles. It seemed crazy to think so, yet it actually happened. The Azzurri will thus return to savor the thrill of a final act 25 years after the last time.

The Serbian world no.1 appeared visibly dazed at the end of the dispute, and he didn’t hide it in the press conference: “Congratulations to Italy for qualifying for the final, they deserved it. They played very well, especially Jannik in singles and also in doubles. One can only congratulate him for such a performance. Personally it’s a big disappointment and I take responsibility, I had three match points and I was so close to winning. It’s really a shame. This is sport. When you lose for your country, the feeling of bitterness is even greater“.

The winner of 24 Slam titles then explained the moment in which he missed three match points against Sinner from a 0-40 situation: “At this level, against one of the best players in the world, everything happens very quickly. At 0-40 I entered the rally, but I missed from the center of the court and he then made a couple of excellent serves. Maybe I had a passer in hand at 30-40, but he did well at the net. He was serving very well and it was difficult to read his serve“.

Djokovic then focused on one of the main weapons of the Italian tennis player: “He has one of the fastest forehands, gives him a lot of spin and a lot of power: that didn’t surprise me too much. I know Jannik’s qualities, but I thought maybe he would drop a bit in doubles, but that wasn’t the case. He maintained the highest level. Even in the third set I had many opportunities to make a break, but every time he needed it, he always found the serve“.

The 1987 class doesn’t hide that the Davis Cup was one of his great goals of the season: “You just have to shake his hand and move on. Obviously this is difficult to accept. I was really trying to cheer myself up this week. All season my thoughts have been on this week with my Davis Cup team. I tried to contribute. I did it in the first round, but I couldn’t do it today“.
