Dirk Heyne: Former Goalkeeper Legend and Ex-GDR National Player Encourages 1. FC Magdeburg

Dirk Heyne (66) – native of Magdeburg, goalkeeper legend, blue and white popular figure!

He played 323 times for 1. FC Magdeburg. And after reunification 24 times for Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach. He has lived in Hamburg for twelve years and works for the Hamburger SV youth academy. But he was always aware of what was happening at the FCM.

How critical is he of the situation after the 2-0 defeat at Hamburger SV and seven second division games in a row without a win?

Heyne: “The worst thing that can happen now is that you lose your nerve in Magdeburg. Those responsible should remain absolutely calm. The team is currently going through a results crisis. But I’m sure: just one sense of success and it will go in the other direction again.”

But he also has arguments: “Magdeburg got off to a great start in the league. What worked in the beginning has now been put into perspective. Nevertheless, FCM was the better team in Hamburg. At least on par in the other games too. It would be alarming if the team was clearly inferior. But the exact opposite is the case. The setting is right, and so is the performance. If you start questioning everything now, you’re just giving coaches and players alibis.”

Heyne, himself an FCM coach from 2003 to 2007, and the current coach Christian Titz (52) know each other. Both were competitors in the regional league in 2018. Heyne as a coach in Norderstedt, Titz with the HSV U21.

Heyne: “The way Titz lets football play is right. It doesn’t take much to get back on the road to success. But for this to happen, coaches and players must feel full support.”

Will Magdeburg get the corner in the East duel against Rostock on Sunday? “I’m keeping my fingers crossed for it,” says the cult keeper.

And when will he be playing in his hometown again? On December 9th he wants to toast Christmas with veteran stars like “Paule” Seguin (78), Axel Tyll (70), Jürgen Pommerenke (70) and Martin Hoffmann (68).
