Borussia Dortmund vs. FC Bayern – it’s time for the German classic again! On Saturday, vice-president BVB will welcome the permanent champions from Munich to determine their position. There are also some players who have already worn both jerseys. We show you the top 11 defectors between BVB and FCB.

On Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Borussia Dortmund welcomes FC Bayern to Signal Iduna Park. Both teams are still unbeaten in the league this season, so this is a real top game.

It happened again before this season: players switched back and forth between the two figureheads of German football – Raphael Guerreiro from Dortmund to Munich, Marcel Sabitzer in the opposite direction. The two had numerous predecessors in the past years and decades, with Mats Hummels even one who swapped jerseys more often.

We look back and show you the top 11 defectors between the two clubs.

BVB vs. Bayern, defector: Toni Schumacher

The legendary keeper spent his longest time (538 games) at 1. FC Köln, where he was, among other things, cup winner, champion and twice Footballer of the Year. It was only at the age of 37 that he moved from Fenerbahce to FCB on a free transfer, but where he only played eight games and there was no great success. So he ended his career in 1992.

But only to be hired as a goalkeeping coach at Dortmund two years later. His only appearance: In the 1995/96 season, he came on as a substitute for the last two minutes shortly before the end and became champions with BVB at the age of 42 – to date, no player has been older when they won the title. Until 2019 he was vice president of 1. FC Köln.

BVB vs. Bayern, defector: Niklas Süle

After four years at FC Bayern, the defensive specialist was no longer able to agree on a new contract with those responsible in 2022. In addition to financial questions, advisor Volker Struth particularly criticized the lack of appreciation.

Interested parties were queuing up for the free transfer international player, including Chelsea FC, who were given good chances by England fan Süle. But the 26-year-old moved to Dortmund, where he competes with Mats Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck. At times he was also used as a right-back.

BVB vs. Bayern, defector: Thomas Helmer

A year after his Bundesliga debut, Borussia Dortmund secured the skills of the up-and-coming defender and celebrated cup victory with him a short time later. In 1992, Helmer finally moved to FC Bayern Munich for the then record sum of 7.5 million DM and it was there that he really started winning.

He can call himself a cup winner, three-time champion, UEFA Cup winner and European champion. He narrowly missed out on the CL triumph in 1999.

BVB vs. Bayern, defector: Mats Hummels

The story is well known. Coming from FC Bayern’s youth team, Hummels won the championship, cup and almost the Champions League with Dortmund before he took the step back to Bayern in 2016.

He took Munich’s guarantee of the title with him, but the euphoric fans, among others, drew him back to BVB three years later. “I was up for these moments here in the stadium,” he enthused about the Dortmund south stand. He had a lot of these moments in the 2022/23 season – but another championship title in black and yellow is a long time coming. He recently extended his contract again until 2024.

BVB vs. Bayern, defector: Raphael Guerreiro

When Raphael Guerreiro came to Borussia Dortmund in 2016, the newly crowned European champion was not initially used as a left-back. He played the first five games in central midfield until he had to move to left back due to an injury. Afterwards, ex-BVB coach Thomas Tuchel moved him back into central midfield. Under Lucien Favre he even played more as a left winger.

With BVB, Guerreiro won the DFB Cup twice and the Super Cup once. After missing out on the championship title almost at the last minute, he is now going to FCB – and wants to raise the championship trophy there. Unfortunately, he brought his susceptibility to injuries with him from Dortmund.

BVB vs. Bayern, defector: Torsten Frings

Of course, today’s coach is always associated with SV Werder Bremen. But he also celebrated great success in black and yellow and red and white. In 2002 he moved to the then German champions Borussia Dortmund, but a torn cruciate ligament later slowed him down.

So two years later he went to the then runner-up Bayern, with whom he won the championship trophy straight away, only to go back to Bremen after just one year.

BVB vs. Bayern, defector: Sebastian Rode

With great talent, Bayern gave Sebastian Rode a chance at the age of 23 from Frankfurt, but the midfield strategist was repeatedly thwarted by serious injuries.

The following three years in Dortmund didn’t turn into a love story either, as he only played 22 games during this time due to injury. He has now been fully integrated back into Eintracht Frankfurt, won the Europa League as captain and was in the DFB Cup final. Unfortunately, Rode is still regularly struggling with injuries.

BVB vs. Bayern, defector: Stefan Reuter

He played for BVB for a total of twelve years and appeared on the pitch 69 times for Germany. The right winger got his start at 1. FC Nürnberg, where he first recommended himself to first division club Offenbach and then to FC Bayern Munich. He later sold grass pitches professionally and steered the fortunes of FC Augsburg as manager for more than a decade. Most recently, Reuter was even linked with a return to FCB, but there was no truth in the rumors surrounding Reuters as the new sports director.

BVB vs. Bayern, defector: Michael Rummenigge

At the age of 17, the youth national player followed his big brother to Munich and collected a total of six titles there. After moving to Dortmund, Rummenigge wasn’t particularly popular at first, but the successes (DFB Cup victory) still came.

Interesting: Rummenigge achieved the feat of scoring the goal of the month in the Bundesliga three times.

BVB vs. Bayern, defector: Mario Götze

The 2014 World Cup hero also tried his luck at FC Bayern after outstanding years at BVB. But Götze was never able to live up to the high expectations under coach Pep Guardiola and missed out on becoming the next German world star – he definitely had the skills.

Even after returning to BVB he wasn’t happy, but then fought his way back up at PSV Eindhoven. After the SGE’s Europa League victory, he joined Rode’s Eintracht and flourished there again.

BVB vs. Bayern, defector: Robert Lewandowski

Even in the BVB jersey, Robert Lewandowski scored at will, for example three times in the 2012 cup final against Bayern. Particularly memorable in the BVB uniform: his four-pack in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.

In 2014 he finally moved to Säbener Straße, won numerous titles and became probably the best striker in the world. In 2020 he finally won his long-awaited Champions League title.

He now plays in Spain for FC Barcelona, where his goal tally has dropped significantly, but his value to the team is still enormous. Lewy won the Spanish championship with the Catalans in his first year.

Well-known substitutes Marcel Sabitzer, Jürgen Kohler, Robert Kovac, Christian Nerlinger, Markus Feulner, Jürgen Wegmann and Emre Can are available. Should he want to give up coaching, Thomas Tuchel is available as his successor for this selection, after all, he has already coached both colors.
