Cyclist Geraint Thomas: Embracing the Off-Season Lifestyle

Cyclist Geraint Thomas is a person who wears his heart on his sleeve and you sometimes learn something interesting.

The ex-winner of the Tour de France makes no secret of the fact that he likes to enjoy things that he should avoid during the season, such as drinking alcohol. It is a way for the Welshman to let off steam and mentally prepare for the new season.

“In the last two weeks I have honestly been drunk 12 out of 14 nights,” said a candid Thomas. “It’s been a madhouse since I’ve been back in Cardiff. When you see friends again you want to catch up and we’ll go for something to eat or drink.”

“The culture of going out and getting drunk when you’re young stays with you. That’s my way of having fun and getting around people,” said Thomas, who “saw his drinking condition improve.”

The classification rider indicates that he needs such a splurge to get back to a structured life and look forward to his bike.

Something that, according to Geraint Thomas, is less common among the younger generation. “It is now rare that a young rider actually drinks anything,” he notes.

“Not that you have to drink to have a good time. It just shows the difference in mentality,” explains the Ineos rider. “Everything is measured and they all work on it 12 months a year.”

“Even out of season they still cycle or run marathons.”

In preparation for the new season, he will first have to dust off his running shoes.
