Cuban Athletes Escape After Participating in the 2023 Pan American Games

At least seven athletes from Cuba escaped after participating in athletics and hockey at the 2023 Pan American Games held in Santiago, Chile.

Jennifer Martínez, Yakira Guillén, Lismary González, Helec Carta, Geidy Morales and captain Yunia Milanes of the Cuban field hockey team escaped last Saturday, the last day of activities in that discipline, said Cuban sports journalist Francys Romero.

It is worth remembering that in the 2023 Pan American Games the athletes of this sport participated in a match against their counterparts from Uruguay, against whom they lost 3 goals to zero.

While Yoao Illas, bronze medalist in the 400-meter hurdles event, also abandoned his delegation last Saturday.

The 21-year-old sprinter had clocked 49.74 seconds in his test. In April of this year, the athlete managed to win the gold medal at the V ALBA Games, in Caracas, Venezuela, by clocking 3:17:23 minutes in the 4×40 meter mixed relay together with his teammates Roxana Gómez, Lisneidy Veitía and Yoandis Lescay.

It is not the first time that Cuban athletes escape

It should be remembered that this phenomenon is common, since for example, when the Pan American U-23 baseball Championship took place in Aguascalientes, Mexico, Alfredo Fadraga and Yosvany Ávalos, Cuban baseball players, abandoned their delegation. On that occasion, the Cuban Baseball Federation blamed the escape on the “disabling of the agreement aimed at normalizing the arrival of our players to Major League Baseball” in the United States.

At least 60 Cuban athletes have left their delegation so far this year, 2023, according to Diario de Cuba. While in 2022, the number rose to 45 athletes from the island, the PanAm Post stated.

What position is Cuba in the medal table for the 2023 Pan American Games?
