COMMENT: The current and very young Baník should not rush to European cups

Players and coach Pavel Hapal were depressed after the second home defeat in a row (0:1 in the league with Jablonec). It was difficult for them to find words to excuse the end of their cup journey.

In addition, all the talk about bad luck in the end and difficult play against teams that prefer to play from the deep block, none of the demanding fans would want to listen anyway.

Miners want the success they’ve been waiting too long for. What it is like to go to Baník in one of the European competitions, many of the boilermakers have not yet experienced. The others may not even remember the 2010/2011 season, when Ostrava tasted the preliminary round of the Europa League first against the Georgian team Georgia (6:0, 0:0) and then against the Belarusian Mogilev (0:1, 1:2).

However, let’s remember who played for Baník against the Belarusian team. Daněk was in goal, Řezník, Neuwirth, Bolf, Neves in defense, Frejlach, Marek, Hušbauer in midfield and Lukeš, Varadi and Šmejkal in attack. Greguš, Šenkeřík and Pilík alternated.

In order for the club to be able to play and, moreover, to represent it with dignity in the European Cup, it needs a quality and experienced team. The first Miner undoubtedly fulfills this. Players such as Fridrich, Lischka, Almási, Kpozo, Tanko, Rigo, Šín, Letáček and Kubala would surely be liked by any league coach.

However, these boys have yet to reach the second, experience, through tough battles in the league and in the domestic cup. Baník has only one player on the roster who has already turned thirty years old. And with all due respect to Jan Jurošek, he is not the leader who should lead Baník on the field.

The leader should preferably be recruited from a central midfielder. And among them, the oldest is currently injured 29-year-old Daniel Tetour.

And other presumed leaders? Matěj Šín, who is beloved by Ostrava fans, is 19 years old, the reinforcement from Slavia, Tomáš Riga, is 21 years old, and Jiří Boul, as well as David Bucht, are 24 years old. The former captain of the under-21 national team, Filip Kaloč (22 years old), who got a chance against Zlín by the scruff of the neck, but was withdrawn by Hapal at half-time.

And Everton? Why not, of course, the skilled Brazilian does not belong to Baník and can easily return to Slavia in the winter or head elsewhere.

In the league, Baník is currently sixth with a minimal two-point loss to third-placed Mlada Boleslav. He is not very far from the European Cups, even though there are still a lot of matches left before the end of the competition. But is he up to it in them?
