Coach Controversy: Raúl Touted as Union Berlin’s New Coach, but Nenad Bjelica Emerges as Top Candidate

Raúl was touted as the new Union coach on Saturday evening, but now another coach is said to be the top candidate.

The Spanish striker legend Raúl has been considered a hot coaching candidate at the struggling Bundesliga club Union Berlin, but Nenad Bjelica is now said to have the best chance of becoming Urs Fischer’s successor at the Iron Men. This is what the Italian transfer expert reports Gianluca Di Marzio. The trade magazine kicker speculated on Saturday evening about the alleged rapprochement between the Berliners and Raúl.

The Iron Men probably want to introduce the long-term successor to Urs Fischer, who was fired on November 15th, on Sunday. And initially, according to kicker, rumors grew that it was Raúl.

Spanish media had previously reported that the 102-time Spanish international was on Union’s radar. Raúl (46), who stormed for Real Madrid for most of his successful career and wore the Schalke 04 jersey towards the end of his professional career, is currently coach of the Royal U23 team. The team is currently in eleventh place in Spain’s third highest division.

On Sunday morning, however, Marca stated that Raúl would become coach of the first team at Los Blancos in the long term and therefore did not want to leave the second team either.

Bjelica played for Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga between 2001 and 2004. He has previously worked as a coach at Spezia, Lech Poznan, Dinamo Zagreb, Osijek and most recently at Turkish first division club Trabzonspor between April and October of this year.

Union has already been eliminated from the Champions League, but will welcome record winners Real in the premier class on December 12th at the Olympic Stadium. On Saturday afternoon against FC Augsburg (1:1), the team was looked after by interim coach Marco Grote and his assistant Marie-Louise Eta.
