Christian Chénard Joins Ligue Frontière Independent Baseball Club After 20 Years with Canonniers de Québec Program

Involved in the Canonniers de Québec sports-study program for 20 years, Christian Chénard will only have to change locker rooms next season to join the Ligue Frontière independent baseball club, according to what has been learned The sun.

Chénard and Scalabrini know each other well, because in addition to having both been in the Canonniers program, they were also teammates with the Capitales in 2002. A product of Quebec’s elite junior baseball, Chénard pitched for three seasons with the Capitals at the very beginning of the 2000s.

The addition of Chénard to the Capitales coaching staff fits well into the baseball environment in Quebec since he will not have to leave his position as pitching manager with the Canonniers.

The appointment of Chénard, which remains to be confirmed by the Capitals, should however lead to a very small game of musical chairs in the sports-study program since he will no longer be able to lead the U15 AAA team, as he has done for 10 years. The program carried out such an operation last year, when his young colleague Raphaël Prémont took control of the Quebec Diamonds.

Since the departure of Karl Gélinas, who held the dual role of pitching instructor and starter until 2019, three individuals have held the position in the last three years.

Cody Clark in 2023. Robert Carson in 2022. Pierre Arsenault, in 2021 with Team Quebec.

Christian Chénard had a great junior career with the Ambassadeurs de Lévis and the Diamants de Québec in addition to winning the Canadian Championship gold medal a few times.

He attended Briarcliff College in New York State in addition to playing in France, where he served as player-coach in Rouen. He claims a gold medal in the European Cup.

Chénard also boasts an 8-5 record in three seasons with the Capitals from 2000 to 2002. He notably did well in 2002 by maintaining a 4-1 record with 42 strikeouts and barely 12 walks in 54, 2 shifts of work in relief.

He will be joining a team that is coming off back-to-back Frontier League playoff championships. In September, the Capitals defeated the Evansville Otters in five games. In a twist of fate, the manager of these was Andy McCauley, the one who managed the Capitals when Scalabrini and Chénard played in the same edition.
