Challenges and Opportunities for Athletes in Pursuit of Support: An Interview with Juan Miguel Postigos

RCR, November 26, 2023.- At an international level, support for athletes has been growing by leaps and bounds, but unfortunately in our country there is still a need to change the mindset of many authorities so that there can truly be adequate support for sport and the athlete who practices it.

RCR Deportes spoke with Juan Miguel Postigos, an athlete in the Judo discipline, who told us about his participation in the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

“We highlight the medalists with just reason because they deserve it and they are the ones who have made the country be among the 10 best in the medal table, but there are also the non-medalists, they who went and surpassed a mark and that is a growth very important,” he said.

On the other hand, the national athlete stressed that whether or not he manages to qualify for the next Olympic Games in Paris 2024, his decision is to retire from the sport and perhaps support the Judo Federation in other aspects.

“I think that the years have passed, but I don’t want to give it up and my goal is to try to reach the Olympic Games and, no matter what happens, finish my sports career there.”

Postigos then spoke about his sporting experience and what he had to go through to achieve his goals that currently support him at the national and international level.

“The most difficult thing for every athlete when they start this career is the lack of support and that happened to me because I started in professional sports in 2006-2007 and there were no incentives for one to continue and it was having to battle with all those deficits and today what the government and the IPD do is not in line with the athletes who have won the medals and their Federations,” he stated.

Likewise, Juan Miguel Postigos announced what work is like in Europe and the support that all athletes have in that part of the continent.

“Here in France it is another reality, because those who support athletes are the municipalities, the regional governments, the regions, each department invests in its sports and the Ministry of Sports then begins to carve out this path and it is important to try to imitate what Well, like what happens in Colombia, Venezuela and in France, I train twice a day,” he exclaimed.
