Caster Semenya: “I sacrificed myself”

A café in London in the middle of November, the city is already sparkling with Christmas. Caster Semenya comes in a gray tracksuit, she is wearing a wool hat, her hair is braided into cornrows. Her book, “The Race to Be Myself,” was published at the end of October. In it, she portrays herself as a badass and describes how she used to lash out when someone annoyed her. The South African runner has won two Olympic gold medals, three world championship titles and is the fourth fastest 800 meter runner in the world – but she is also known because of the debate about her gender. This is what her book is about, and she is now speaking to a German newspaper about it for the first time. She orders tea, laughs a lot, swears now and then and seems much less cold than in her book. When she speaks, you wish she would clear her throat – she has that kind of deep voice. One that gets stuck in your throat and is almost lost in the noise of the café.
