Carlos Alcaraz Secures Victory at ATP Finals, Medvedev Advances to Semis

Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz celebrated his first victory at the ATP Finals in Turin on Wednesday. Two days after his three-set defeat against Alexander Zverev, the Spaniard won against the Russian Andrej Rublew 7:5.6:2. The 20-year-old thus preserved his chance of reaching the semi-finals. Rublev, on the other hand, no longer has a chance of progressing. In the second match of the red group, Vienna finalist Daniil Medvedev beat Zverev 7:6(7),6:4 in the evening.

That meant Medvedev became the first semi-finalist in the $15 million event. He won 2-0 after two of three group matches and didn’t drop a set either.

Before that, Alcaraz had kept its chance for promotion. “That was a completely different match and level from me. “That’s how I have to play if I want to have a chance at this tournament,” said the Spaniard, happy about his performance.

The decision will be made by the green group on Thursday. The crowd favorite and Vienna winner Jannik Sinner has the best chance of advancing to the semi-finals. The Italian goes into the final day of his pool with two wins and will face Holger Rune in the evening game (9 p.m./Sky). The young Danish star has one win and one defeat to his name so far. Before that, the Serbian top favorite Novak Djokovic (from 2.30 p.m.) will face substitute Hubert Hurkacz.

The Pole plays in place of the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, who has a back injury. After his defeat against Sinner, Djokovic absolutely has to win in order to keep his chance of reaching the semi-finals.

“That was a completely different match and level from me. That’s how I have to play if I want to have a chance at this tournament,” said Alcaraz, happy about his performance. Thanks to the Spaniard’s victory, Zverev can book the semi-final ticket on (today’s) Wednesday evening. If the German wins against Daniil Medvedev, he is guaranteed promotion. Otherwise, the decision will be made on Friday when Zverev plays against Rublev and Alcaraz against Medvedev.
