Cantù Basketball: Overcoming Adversity and Trusting in the Team

“Grinting our teeth, uniting and relying on who we have.” It is the “diktat”, if we want the way, of Sandro Santoro, general manager of Cantù, to overcome the current situation, defined in no uncertain terms as “delicate”. Certainly not for the results – Cantù is second -2 behind Trapani – but for the prolonged absences which force an already tight roster to work overtime. In Agrigento without Baldi Rossi and Cesana it was tough and the pattern could repeat itself – the captain’s recovery is very difficult and unlikely – even on Sunday against the Real revelation Sebastiani Rieti.

In the background there is the transfer market, with a couple of very open negotiations for Riccardo Moraschini and a long man. The feeling is that there won’t be a very short time.

«But all of us – says Santoro – at this moment place the utmost trust in whoever is there. We know that it will be a further effort that we ask to compensate for the difficulties of a delicate moment. For Baldi Rossi and Cesana I think it will take a few days to have more precise timing.”

The emergency continues, in a nutshell: «We show up at home against Rieti in an emergency, just as we were in Agrigento. But we play at home, our building will be there, our fans will be there and this can always make the difference.”

The market could help, but the negotiations set up by Cantù take time: «We have never abandoned the idea of strengthening ourselves. But this year was a particular market: medium-high level Italians for a team like ours are not very many. Furthermore, the fear of six relegations has raised the level of the rosters. If there was a technical idea before, it was then modified with Cagnardi, but this does not mean that the market offers solutions that are within reach and not all of them are practicable. Like, for example, Pellegrino, a marketable name: he will be injured until February. Furthermore, Serie A has recently started: anyone who wants to travel to play more needs at least a couple of weeks.”

The “dead line” is the last day of departure, i.e. November 26th, the last day for exchanges between companies. In a difficult situation, targeting a “big” player like Moraschini entails further difficulties: «We are talking about a captive player, so the interlocutors are him, the agent and the club. In the long run the discussion is similar. For now, let’s make a virtue of necessity, without losing faith in a team that must find the strength to do the things it can do.”
