Bologna Wants to Keep Alexis Saelemaekers After AC Milan Exit

Four Belgians were still playing for AC Milan last season, but none of them are still there to this day. That Aster Vranckx, Divock Origi and Charles De Ketelaere were fired after a disappointing season was no surprise. The fact that Alexis Saelemaekers also had to be replaced was less so.

It was clear that Milan were looking to strengthen their right flank, but our 24-year-old compatriot still seemed allowed to play his role, at least as an understudy. But coach Stefano Pioli had no mercy and sent Saelemaekers to the B team, from where Bologna eventually released him.

Bologna wants to keep Saelemaekers

The ambitious club ultimately recruited the Red Devil on the basis of a rental contract, for which it reportedly paid 500,000 euros. He also managed to negotiate a purchase option, which was reportedly set at 11 million euros.

According to Calciomercato, Bologna also wants to keep Saelemaekers at the end of the current season. But the Bolognese would not yet exercise the purchase option, because technical director Giovanni Sartori believes he can still lower the price.

In addition, Bologna also believes it can take advantage of the fact that some of its players are in Milan’s sights. Joshua Zirkzee and Lewis Ferguson would indeed be on the San Siro shelves.

Bologna could therefore try to negotiate an exchange in order to keep Saelemaekers. Whether this plan will come to fruition remains to be seen, but it seems likely that Saelemaekers will continue playing for the current Serie A number eight next season.

After a difficult start, he managed to secure a starting place in the last matches, even as a left winger. There is therefore a big difference with his situation with the Red Devils, where Domenico Tedesco sees in Saelemaekers above all a candidate for the right-back position, a position which is rarely filled.
