Bas Dost left the hospital in Amsterdam on Friday and continues his rehabilitation at home. An internal defibrillator (ICD) has been installed at the NEC rush hour that intervenes in the event of cardiac arrhythmias.

“I am happy to be back home and will now recover in peace,” says 34-year-old Dost on the NEC site. “I would like to thank everyone who has supported me over the past period. We really appreciate it.”

Dost has been in hospital since October 29. The attacker collapsed in the final phase of the AZ-NEC match. He was resuscitated and taken to hospital when conscious. Investigations showed that Dost suffers from an inflamed heart muscle.

“There can be various causes that cause a heart muscle to become inflamed,” Dost responded last week. “The consequences can be quite serious, but I was lucky that I was successfully resuscitated on the field. I cannot emphasize enough how grateful I am to the doctors of NEC and AZ for their adequate actions there on the field.”

It is still unclear if and when Dost will return to the field. The former Dutch international has played for NEC since last summer. He has so far scored three goals and two assists in eight games for Nijmegen.

Daley Blind is another well-known footballer who suffered from an inflamed heart muscle. The defender sat on the ground during the Champions League match Ajax-Valencia in December 2019 due to heart problems. The Dutch international has been playing with a defibrillator ever since.
