In several towns in the area, such as Las Acequias, Alejandro Roca and further away in Marcos Juárez, this discipline is practiced, which is Olympic and currently has Argentine representation in the Pan American Games Santiago de Chile 2023.

Nicolás Oliva, one of the Argentine badminton representatives at the Pan American Games.

Agüero spoke with Al Toque Sports about this new sports proposal at the University: “Together we brought the proposal to the UNRC to make it another sport that can be enjoyed in the city. The purpose is to make the sport known in this part of the province”.

The coach practiced the discipline and, upon moving to Río Cuarto, he saw that he could not continue training: “Not being originally from Río Cuarto, I played badminton and when I moved to the city I couldn’t do it anywhere. It means a responsibility to bring this sport to the city, install it and make sure people like it. “Those who participate in this discipline leave very happy and wanting more.”

Agüero highlighted the values of this discipline: “Badminton is family. A family where we all know each other. There are people from other provinces, like San Luis and Mendoza, who practice a lot. We really enjoy sharing moments, we have tournaments every month because each delegation holds two a year. We have a whole year of competitions every month.”

Badminton classes at UNRC are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Regarding the gameplay, the coach said: “It’s like something similar to tennis, so that people can imagine it. The serves are crossed, the best of three sets are played with 21 points each. It can be played individually or in doubles. It is a versatile sport, anyone can play it” and he added: There is also para-badminton, adapted for people with motor disabilities, which we teach at the University”.

The main objective of promoting this discipline in Río Cuarto is to raise the level of regional athletes: “We have young people who have participated in the Evita National Games and others who are in the U-15 National Team project in the area. Our aspiration is to make the sport known to promote the best players. It means a big step for athletes in the area,” Agüero concluded.
