The bad weather alert continues in Tuscany, a region already devastated by the wave of rain which caused 7 victims. In the night between Saturday and Sunday, due to “heavy rainfall in the already flooded areas, there was a new rupture on the Stella stream in Casini di Quarrata”, a municipality in the Pistoiese area among those affected by the floods of 2 November. On Facebook Gabriele Romiti, mayor of Quarrata, writes: “The Stella torrent broke its banks again tonight as already happened between Thursday and Friday, I came to tell the citizens with loudspeakers to go up to the upper floors and then many bags to everyone. The situation is very difficult. At the moment it has stopped raining and there seems to be a bit of sunshine, let’s hope, because the orange alert is until midnight. For the area of the Pistoia plain, the last one was generally a night of severe inconvenience. (THE WEATHER FORECAST). Due to “the heavy rains during the night which also led to further significant accumulations in the already flooded areas, there were new electricity outages. Enel technicians are still at work, around 16,000 users are without power”, writes the Tuscan governor Eugenio Giani on social media (WHAT THE WEATHER WILL BE LIKE IN ITALY MONDAY 6 NOVEMBER).

Roads closed in Montale, mud and debris in Stabbia

In Montale, a municipality in the Pistoiese area, some roads were closed during the night because, as communicated by the mayor Ferdinando Betti in a message posted on Facebook around 2am, the Agna torrent was “overflowing”, responsible for the flooding which occurred on 2 November in the area industrial and station. The mayor also made an appeal not to pass through closed roads and not to remove the barriers positioned. Montale is one of the three municipalities – the others are Prato and Montemurlo – where preventive evacuations began last night in anticipation of the new wave of bad weather: the area affected by the ordinance is that of the station for those who live on the ground or underground floors and have no possibility of going up to higher floors. On the other hand, the mayor of the metropolitan city of Florence Dario Nardella carried out an inspection in Stabbia, a hamlet of Cerreto Guidi (Florence): two days after the heavy rains that hit the area, the town is still flooded and further rainfall has delayed the clean-up from mud and debris.

The situation

Due to fears linked to the new orange alert for bad weather in Tuscany, preventive evacuations of 1200 people were ordered yesterday evening in Montemurlo, Montale and Prato, in correspondence with the ruptures of the Agna and Bagnolo streams. “The disturbance that affected our territory in the last few hours has passed and a general decline, albeit slow, is expected across the entire main grid.” Thus the Civil Protection of Prato – one of the three municipalities where preventive evacuations were ordered yesterday – in the update at 6.50 on the situation linked to the bad weather emergency. Regarding the river situation, it is explained that “the Bisenzio in Prato is above the first warning level, stable” while in Gamberame “it is above the first warning level, decreasing”. The Ombrone river “in Poggio a Caiano has just exceeded the second alert level” while in Ponte alla Vanne “it is above the second alert level, decreasing. To alleviate the situation resulting from the raising of the Ombrone level, a The Ponte alle Vanne expansion tank was opened just now.” The Civil Protection then confirms “traffic problems in the San Ippolito area due to the flooding of via Visiana and via Traversa per Mazzone. The road has been closed for several hours”, advised “to avoid going to the area”.

The toll of the flood

So far, 7 people have died due to the bad weather that hit Tuscany on November 2nd. The latest victim, a 69-year-old, was found in a corn field in Campi Bisenzio (Florence), the area most affected by this wave, where 800 hectares of land ended up under water. However, an 84-year-old in Prato is still missing: the car he was driving, on his way home, was found yesterday ‘crumpled’ in flooded ground but there is no trace of the man. Yesterday evening, interventions were underway to restore drinking water and electricity utilities. The damage count, according to an estimate made known by President Giani, would amount to over half a billion for “the interventions that will have to be carried out in the Florence-Prato-Pistoia area, then there is also the need to quantify what happened in Pisa and Livorno”.

High water in Muggia, Trieste, Grado, Monfalcone and Marano Lagunare; storm surges, flooding and fallen trees in several municipalities, landslides and closed roads. In Liguria fallen trees, small landslides and flooding

In Liguria, heavy rain and wind caused small landslides, flooding and tree falls without however creating particular critical issues. Dozens of interventions were carried out due to the fury of the wind which reached 150 km per hour in the heights and due to flooding caused by the concomitance of the sea storm and the flooding of the torrents. The Entella river is under special surveillance. The wind blew off a house in Chiavari and caused dozens of trees to collapse in the municipalities of Borzonasca and Carasco. Flooding was also recorded in Recco and Rapallo. The gale-force winds also hit the province of La Spezia, where dozens of fallen trees and landslides were reported which affected local roads. Problems also on the Aurelia towards La Spezia, in the Riccò del Golfo area, due to a landslide. The President of the Region Giovanni Toti and the Councilor for Civil Protection Giacomo Giampedrone say regarding the possible storm surges expected today on the Ligurian coasts: “This night passed without any particular critical issues despite the heavy rain that hit an area already heavily affected by the bad weather. We renew with greater force the appeal addressed to citizens to maintain behavior aimed at maximum prudence, given that for today a black stamp warning has been issued for intense storms by the functional weather center of Arpal.
