Axel Witsel’s Hope for the Red Devils at the European Championship and Future Plans

The Red Devils go to the European Championship as a distant outsider. The qualifying campaign was of course a success with a group win, but against Austria it turned out that the Belgians still have a lot of work to do against better teams. Axel Witsel hopes that his ex-teammates will make a splash at the European Championships.

Witsel initially indicated that he wanted to continue as a Red Devil until after the 2024 European Championship. Domenico Tedesco decided differently. He no longer called up Witsel, the player did not fit into his plans as a midfielder, and he resigned as an international player himself.

Witsel praises the Red Devils

In Spain, Witsel looked back on his passage with the national team. “It’s a real shame with the team we had, with Hazard, Lukaku, De Bruyne and others, that we didn’t win anything. We did write history,” he said, referring to third place at the World Cup in Russia.

The defensive strongman of Atlético Madrid is looking forward to the new generation. “There’s a new generation coming and we’re going to see what’s going to happen. We have a very good selection.”

Future trainer?

Witsel is 34 years old and then a footballer naturally thinks about the future. “I already have my UEFA B and A diploma as a coach. I will take further training after my career. It would also be nice to become a sporting director, but now all the focus is on playing football ourselves.”

Witsel wants to continue for another two to three years. The ex-Red Devil is out of contract and they are already eyeing him in Major League Soccer. Standard is also keen to bring him back. He could end his career there and then make a new start as a youth coach.
