Austria Wien-Austria Klagenfurt, Cup: the beauty of normality

Staying in Vienna for several days allowed me to enjoy the national cup match between the two purple Austrians. On the one hand the famous Austria Wien, which holds the record for victories in the Austrian cup, whose opponent is Austria Klagenfurt, rebuilt in 2007 after a complicated situation in which football in the capital of Carinthia sank (also for political reasons), found themselves in the Bundesliga for the first time since 2021 and currently somewhat surprisingly in fourth place in the table. For me this is at the same time a good opportunity to see a “normal” match, something I always like to do to have a realistic vision of the fan scene, which is not possible if you only attend derbies or big matches.

The stadium, almost completely renovated, still gives a compact and authentic impression. The home curve is completely marked by the banners of all the main groups and overall, even or especially after the dissolution of the “Fanatics” group a few months ago, seen from the outside it seems to give a feeling of greater unity while also being visually more appealing.

There are around 50-80 fans in the away section, who are very active throughout the match. However they have no chance to prevail against the vocal power of the home curve despite being very motivated and colored with different flags. A very suggestive comparison for them, which is certainly also due to the match that promises to be close and the tension that reigns until the last minute on the pitch.

The home curve renounces particular optical or choreographic effects, as well as the use of pyrotechnics of any nature (even in Austria times are slowly becoming more difficult, I will talk about it in more detail in the next few days). However, the home team, not so large at least in terms of participation in the active nucleus of the ultras, nevertheless manages to motivate the entire environment very well with its choirs, offering all its vocal potential in support of the team, which rewards its I sacrificed by collecting a hard-fought 1-0 victory, celebrating under my own curve at the end of the ninety minutes of play…

In reality, it is precisely races like today’s that can really show the quality and potential of individual corners, and at the same time help us appreciate normality. As exciting as derbies are, they do not reflect this normality…
