Australia’s Davis Cup Team Takes First Place in Final Against Finland

The Australians took a great option to take first place in the Davis Cup final. Opposed to Finland in the last four, Lleyton Hewitt’s men won the first point this Friday in Malaga. Alexei Popyrin, 40th player in the world, won in two sets (7-6, 6-2) and a little less than an hour and a half (1h29 precisely) against Otto Virtanen, 171st in the ATP and hero of the quarter-final against Canada. Alex de Minaur therefore has the opportunity to validate his country’s qualification during the second singles match against Emil Ruusuvuori.

Otto Virtanen will, however, have regrets. Slightly superior in the first act, he was unable to materialize his domination at 6-5 on the restart when he obtained a set point. On important points, he made too many errors on the restart (25 unforced errors in total to 11). Once the first set was snatched in the tie-break, Popyrin took the psychological advantage and won the last four games, well helped at 3-2 by his opponent who chained two double faults to be broken for the first times.
