Australia Advances to Davis Cup Final with Unassailable 2-0 Lead

Australia is in the Davis Cup final for the second time in a row.

Alexei Popyrin and Alex de Minaur took an unassailable 2-0 lead against the previously surprising Finns in the individual games in the first semi-final in Malaga on Friday.

Popyrin defeated Otto Virtanen 7:6 (5), 6:2, then de Minaur ensured clear conditions against Emil Ruusuvuori with a 6:4, 6:3. On Sunday (4 p.m.) Lleyton Hewitt’s team will face either Serbia or Italy.

Australia is chasing its first title in 20 years

The second semi-final will only take place on Saturday (12:00 p.m./live DAZN) and is eagerly awaited. Because Serbia, led by superstar and ATP Finals winner Novak Djokovic, is playing against Italy with Turin finalist Jannik Sinner.

Finland had eliminated Argentina in the qualifying round, then record winners USA and Croatia in the group phase and in the quarterfinals without the still ailing Ruusuvuori defending champion Canada.

Australia is a 28-time Davis Cup champion, trailing only the USA (32). However, they won their last title to date 20 years ago.
