Athletics, Rome wants to host the 2027 World Championships: the candidacy is being evaluated

The challenge is launched: Rome 2027. Italy’s candidacy for the World Athletics Championships to be held forty years after the 1987 edition is official. Today and tomorrow, World Athletics, the world federation, is in the capital to evaluate the dossier presented by the Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL). In the morning, FIDAL president Stefano Mei and World Athletics Council member Anna Riccardi welcomed the delegation led by Antti Pihlakoski, head of the evaluation commission, to Rome.

INSIGHTS

In the first meeting, the Bidding Evaluation Commission was received by the Minister for Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi who expressed the Government’s support for the Rome 2027 project.

Afterwards, the visit continued with the inspection of the Olympic stadium, in the presence of the CEO of Sport and Health Diego Nepi Molineris and the director of the stadium and the Foro Italico Park Andrea Santini. This afternoon, however, the meeting with the Capitoline mayor Roberto Gualtieri. Finally, tomorrow morning there will be a meeting with CONI president Giovanni Malagò.

Forty years ago, the second edition in the history of the Athletics World Championships took place from 28 August to 6 September. An edition characterized not only by the successes of some extraordinary athletes, such as Edwin Moses, Stefka Kostadinova (still the world record holder in the women’s high jump) and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, but also by controversies, such as on the occasion of the mix-up on the jump “rigged” by Giovanni Evangelisti. Italy concluded the world championship in sixth place in the medal table with 5 medals: 2 golds (Maurizio Damilano in the 20 km and Francesco Panetta in the 3000 steeplechase), 2 silvers (Panetta in the 10,000 meters and Alessandro Andrei in the shot put) and a bronze (Gelindo Bordin in the marathon).
