As the Mainz “Allgemeine Zeitung” reported on Tuesday, El Ghazi has filed a dismissal protection lawsuit against his former club at the Mainz labor court. The Dutchman is apparently reacting to the dismissal without notice by the FSV at the beginning of the month. Mainz separated from the attacker after a series of incidents surrounding a social media post by the 28-year-old.

After the Hamas attack on Israel began, El Ghazi made an anti-Israel post and was then suspended from the association “indefinitely” on October 17th. The pardon followed 13 days later – combined with a warning from the club and a statement from El Ghazi that was distributed in the club’s announcement.

However, the striker distanced himself from the content of this message just two days later in another post about the Israel-Palestine conflict. The FSV then announced that it would have the case examined legally and finally ended the contractual relationship with El Ghazi on November 3rd. He responded with another posting and the words “The loss of my livelihood is nothing compared to the hell that is falling on the innocents in Gaza.”

According to the report, El Ghazi is represented in the lawsuit he has now filed by labor and sports lawyer Alexander Bergweiler. After the termination, he had already publicly expressed doubts about the legality of the measure. “I don’t see any statement in the new post that is not covered by freedom of expression,” Bergweiler told the “Allgemeine Zeitung” about the second post, which was ultimately decisive for the termination.

The contractual relationship with El Ghazi only began a few weeks before the case began, when Rheinhessen signed the former Dutch international, who had not previously had a club. His contract was dated until June 30, 2025. The labor court will now have to clarify whether it will take effect again soon.
