A leader with very poor facilities

El Bisbal leads the EBA basketball league with solvency, mobilizes nearly 300 players and has put the capital of the Baix Empordà on the sports map. But it has very poor facilities. While waiting for solutions that do not arrive, it is cyclical that this situation is reported from the club, or from around the municipality. One of the last to do so, this same week, was the former Bordils handball coach and teacher, Pau Campos. The state of the Fair pavilion is deplorable, @bisbalbasquet has been complaining about it for some time, and rightly so. Those of us who use this space to do physical education also tell you that it is a shame. The problem is not solved, the water is not collected or the area is marked”, he wrote in a tweet on the X social network, accompanied by some photos, a picture is worth a thousand words, where it is clear the denigrating state of the installation

The problem comes from far away, twenty years ago. The time that makes Bisbal wait for the construction of a new pavilion which, for the moment, neither arrives nor is expected. “The main deficit we have is the lack of space”, regrets Joan Ferrer, sports director of Bisbal basketball, who details that the 280 players they mobilize train between the Old Pavilion and the Fair, in not very good conditions. From children and cadets onwards, they should be able to work with the entire track, but they have to do it with half cross tracks due to the overcrowding of the spaces. Ferrer recalls that “the claim comes from twenty years ago, we were proposed to go to the Fair as an alternative space until the new pavilion was built, but nothing has been done yet”. Or yes The passage of time and lack of maintenance has worsened obsolete equipment in the 21st century.

The first team plays in the Old Pavilion, which is 40 years old, where there are only 4 dressing rooms, in a rather neglected state. Ferrer explains that “in the previous mandate there was a project to make four more, but it was stopped. The degradation is absolute.” This facility, like the Fair pavilion, suffers from drip problems and the last change of parquet was made more than a decade ago. In 2016, the club took to the streets, with training sessions in the Town Hall square, to raise awareness and denounce the situation. Nothing has been done, yet, to fix it. The drippers also put the physical integrity of athletes at risk due to the danger of slipping.

This problem also exists in the Fair pavilion, where part of the parquet is raised. Some of the baskets, the ones that have not been hung and are to be put in and taken out, are held with clamps because of their poor condition. Ferrer indicates that “we at the club will continue to be consistent, we will continue to fight and claim what are the sporting rights of the boys and girls of La Bisbal to be able to play sports safely. We don’t understand why they have fewer rights than any other population. We cannot compare ourselves to any other municipality, because everywhere they have updated their pavilions and sports facilities». Bisbal is now ruled by the socialist Óscar Aparicio, thanks to a pact with Junts and TxLB. At the moment there is no evidence that their plans include even drafting a project for a new pavilion.

In the meantime, the club will continue to train players and be the pride of a fan base that fills the Old Pavilion every fortnight to cheer on the leader of the EBA league (seven wins and no defeats). On the horizon appears one of the next big dates marked in red for Bisbal: the final of the Catalan League of the category that will be played at home on December 6 against Boet Mataró. Last season the title eluded Carles Rofes’ team against Barça, also at home. This time they want to remove the thorn.
