56th Manuel Campos Judo Tournament Set to Gather Nearly 800 Young Athletes

The 56th edition of the Manuel Campos Judo Tournament, which stands as the longest-running competition in this form of fighting in Spain, was presented this Wednesday morning in the press room of the Gran Canaria Arena. The tournament will meet on November 19, at the Ciudad Deportiva de Gran Canaria (Martín Freire)to nearly 800 athletes, between 3 and 15 years old, belonging to 28 clubs in Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma.

The presentation event was attended by the president and technical director of the Insular Judo Federation of Gran Canaria, Domingo Afonso and Alejandro Doblado; and the sponsor of the event, Manuel Campos. Domingo Afonso highlighted the longevity of the event and “as I say every year around this time, we are very happy. My role is to keep this event alive. It is a test in which three generations of participants can be seen, Since it is the oldest in Spain, grandparents, parents and children who are going to participate next Sunday have passed through it.”

Alejandro Doblado thanked Manuel Campos for his commitment to grassroots judo and his trust with the Gran Canaria Island Judo Federation to celebrate this tournament one more year, for which it is “very important and a source of pride to organize it.” In addition, he explained the technical part of the event and pointed out that “I am one of those generations that participated in this tournament when I was a child and now my children do it. “We must value the fact that it is the longest-running tournament in Spain and many of the competitors who have gone through this tournament have been European champions, world champions and representing their country in the Olympic Games.”

Finally, Manuel Campos showed his satisfaction for continuing to celebrate this tournament, created by his father, and thanked the Insular Judo Federation of Gran Canaria for the support it always gives to this tournament. «We have been injecting the virus of this sport, judo, into the youngest members of families for 56 years.. It is the oldest grassroots sport in Spain and the most important thing is the training of these young people, since they are our future and to do so we have to provide them with the appropriate tools so that they are focused and work to be a better version of themselves. «.

The organization of the tournament has planned for the development of 12 tatami mats, to guarantee the fluidity of the competition that will have a league or direct knockout format. In addition, competitors will have to be punctual at the time of the call, having 30 seconds to be on the tatami.. If after that time some of the judokas do not show up, the prepared competitor will win by Fusen-Gachi.
