20th Gala Méritas de Loisir et Sport Côte-Nord Celebrates Outstanding Student-Athletes

Some 90 scholarship recipients, around ten winners, a little over $50,000 awarded to north-coastal student-athletes, that sums up the 20th edition of the Méritas de Loisir et Sport Côte-Nord Gala which was held on November 4 at the Sept-Îles Convention Center.

No less than 220 people were present at the event, an opportunity to highlight the involvement, surpassing, efforts and performances of north-coastal athletes, but also to recognize the contribution of volunteers and officials. Animation was entrusted to Philippe LeBreux and Guillaume Dubé.

For the 2023 edition of the Gala, nearly 100 applications were submitted by twenty-two different regional associations and clubs. This is almost double the sports organization compared to 2022.

The big winners of the evening were, as Female and Male Athlete of the Year, in individual sport, Audréanne Foster from (figure skating) and Machiel Talbot from Baie-Comeau (judo), and, in team sport, Marilou Pratte from Baie-Comeau (hockey) and Emmanuel Normand from Sept-Îles (curling).

Rewarded at the RSEQ Gala last May, the Osprey from the Monseigneur-Labrie school in Havre-Saint-Pierre in junior women’s volleyball is honored this time by Loisir et Sport Côte-Nord as “Team of the Year”.

With two editions of the Quebec Games in 2023, there are two athletes from the North Shore who receive the Alice Cloutier Prize (ethics and sporting values), namely Emma Turbide (Sept-Îles) in badminton for the meeting of winter in Rivière-du-Loup and Lili Rose Pelletier (Baie-Comeau) in volleyball for the Summer Final held in Rimouski.

Loisir et Sport Côte-Nord, through the various scholarships awarded during the Gala, also awarded them to three athletes who took part in multi-sport competitions, namely to Élizabeth Lavoie from Fermont, who competed in snowboarding at the Canada to Prince Edward Island, as well as Leelou Vollant (swimming) and Marley St-Onge (athletics) for their participation in the North American Indigenous Games in Halifax.

Just as with the choice of the recipients of the Alice-Cloutier Prize, the selection for the two athletes of the North American Indigenous Games was made by the mission team in place.

The event will move to Baie-Comeau next year for a 21st edition on November 2, 2024.
