There will be 10,731 in action, of them 7,889 conventional and 2,842 paranational. At stake are 663 medals and, of course, glory forever. His Majesty’s opening of the XXII National Games and VI Paranational Games 2023 of the Coffee Axis will be today in Pereira at 7:00 p.m. The idols and heroes of Colombian sports will compete until December 10 in multiple disciplines: chess, archery, boxing, road cycling, men’s and women’s indoor soccer, judo, wrestling, sambo wrestling, swimming, shooting, among others.

The prestige of the region is also at stake. Although, in advance there is already a mole with the delay or non-delivery of promised scenarios, what remains is to enjoy the most important sporting event in Colombia.

Neither Caldas nor Risaralda nor Quindío arrived at the opening date with all the fields ready. 7 of the 18 built or remodeled stages will be finished; 6 in Armenia and 1 in Risaralda.

Then, about the time, you can’t cry over spilled milk. Here are the best athletes to accompany you, congratulate you, console you and above all to thank you for sharing part of your sweat and glory in these coffee-growing lands.

And also to tell you: Good luck guys, because the Games are the starting point of the selection cycle and preparation of the athletes who will represent us in international competitions.

These fairs arrive with a record number of participants. There will be 7,889 athletes, of which 3,475 women and 4,414 men, to be part of the program that includes 39 sports.

Close antecedents indicate that in the Games that were held in Cali, Buenaventura and San Andrés y Providencia, in 2008, 5,073 were present; in Cauca, Córdoba and Norte de Santander, 5,144; in Tolima and Chocó, 5,718, and in Bolívar 2019, 6,212.

These Games are already veterans, saying that in five years they will celebrate their first century. That data is larger. Look at this review shared by the Ministry of Sports: “On December 19, 1928, the history of these games began to be written, in golden letters. It was the day the competitions were inaugurated in Cali, which became the first city to receive them: 12 delegations participated, in total there were 300 athletes, who were divided into two categories, private and collegiate, who competed in seven sports ( chess, tricycle, football, baseball, basketball, tennis and athletics)”.

Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío formed from 1905 to 1966 what was known as El Gran Caldas, el Viejo Caldas, called the Green Butterfly. However, together or separately they already have their history as the epicenter of the Games.

Veteran

The Coffee Axis has already experienced what it is like to vibrate with the pedal strokes, the goals, the baskets, the points of karatekas, judokas, the brands and more.

Manizales was the fourth venue for the Games. In 1936, after Cali, Medellín and Barranquilla, it became the host of the contest.

In 1974 the turn was for Pereira. In 1988 Armenia was the nation’s athletic center. It was the first edition in which the sub-venues appeared, in this case Risaralda, Caldas, Ibagué and Montería, which supported the capital of Quindío in the organization of the event.

For the first time, the region will have the pleasure of hosting the Paranational Games, whose first edition took place in 2004 and was based in Bogotá. Since then, they have been a constant in the Colombian sports calendar.

Caldas, Quindío and Risaralda (supported by Valle and Cundinamarca) are once again united by sport. Despite the dissolution of Greater Caldas, the region remains committed to being united with its coffee, with its road projects, with its snow-capped mountains and with sports. So, “Together is better” as the pageant song says.
