RICHMOND, Va. (November 20, 2023) – Three standout freshmen from CAA Football were among 22 finalists announced for the 2023 Jerry Rice Award, which honors the national freshman of the year in Division I FCS college football and is presented by FedEx Ground.

Named as finalists were Stony Brook wide receiver Anthony Johnson, Campbell wide receiver VJ Wilkins and UAlbany running back Griffin Woodell.

Johnson made a team-high 59 receptions for 714 yards and three touchdowns. He led all freshmen in FCS in receptions per game (5.9) and yards per game (71.4 ypg), and ranked among the top five in the CAA in both categories.

Wilkins contributed 52 reception for 546 yards and four touchdowns. He was sixth in the CAA in receptions per game (4.7). Wilkins also excelled on special teams, averaging 21.2 yards on kickoff returns.

Woodell rushed for a team-best 694 yards and six touchdowns and added 24 receptions for 231 yards and 4 TD’s. He ran for over 100 yards in three of his final five games and ranked 8th in the CAA in all purpose yards (87.0 ypg).

The Rice Award, first presented in 2011 and now in its 13th season, is named after legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice, who starred at Mississippi Valley State as part of his Hall of Fame career. Past recipients include Cooper Kupp, Chase Edmonds, Trey Lance and Shedeur Sanders.
