“We have been made aware of reports of a significant number of deepfakes and manipulated content circulating on your platform and some still appearing online,” Breton noted in his letter.

Therefore, he invited Zuckerberg, “to inform my team without delay about the details of the measures he has taken to mitigate these deepfakes.”

Previously, Breton had sent a letter to Elon Musk warning him about the misinformation circulating on his social network X after the attack carried out on Saturday by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas in Israel.

To Zuckerberg, Breton noted: “Following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel, we are seeing an increase in illegal content and disinformation being spread in the EU through certain platforms.” Therefore, he asked him to remain “very attentive.”

Breton recalled that the Digital Services Law requires “timely, diligent and objective” action against illegal content, and the need for “proportionate mitigation and effective measures. I urgently invite you to ensure that your systems are effective. Needless to say We also hope that you will contact the relevant law enforcement authorities and Europol.

Like Musk, Breton gave Zuckerberg a period of 24 hours to report on the measures taken to prevent the circulation of disinformation or manipulated information.

A Meta spokesperson responded that after the Hamas offensive, the group “quickly created a special operations center staffed with experts, including fluent Hebrew and Arabic speakers, to closely monitor and respond to this highly volatile situation.”

These teams ensure compliance with “our policies or local laws” and coordinate with fact-checkers to combat misinformation, the spokesperson said.
