It is one of the 12 biggest badminton tournaments in the world: the Yonex French International badminton tournament kicked off this Tuesday from the Glaz Arena in Cesson Sévigné, near Rennes (35). The 232 best players will compete until this Sunday. Among them, nine French people including Thom Gicquel – local to the stage – in mixed doubles with his partner Delphine Delrue. Both are in 8th place in the world rankings. In total, 22 nationalities are represented.

Ille-et-Vilaine, first department in number of licensees

This competition is a “stage of the world circuit and brings valuable points for the “Race to Paris”. It also counts in the race for qualification for the Paris Olympic Games in 2024. After 15 seasons at the Pierre de Coubertin stadium in Paris, it is therefore the Cesson enclosure, which was chosen by the French Federation of Bad (FFBaD), which wishes to bring this sport to the territories, but for Yohan Penel, president of the Tricolor Federation, the choice of Ille -et-Vilaine is far from being a coincidence.

“Ille-et-Vilaine is the leading badminton department in France in terms of number of licensees and then, there was the experience, last February, of the French Elite Championships, which took place in this room and which was a real nice surprise for everyone. It was a remarkable organization in a room that was perfect for our event.

Obviously, the specifications of such a competition are higher than the French Elite Championships and we discover all the benefits of this room, in terms of space, vision around the fields… and the team really welcomes us to open arms, these are so many assets for this territory.”

The FFBaD has more than 7,800 licensees in Ille-et-Vilaine and 200,000 in total.
