Xàtiva Badminton Club Shines at Spanish Senior Championship, Bringing Home Seven Medals

The Xàtiva Badminton Club has returned from the Spanish Senior Championship held in Benalmádena (Málaga) loaded with medals. The athletes of the Setabe club have hanged themselves seven metals: one gold, two silver and four bronze in the senior tournament, which brought together 322 athletes from 95 clubs in the national territory. Seven athletes from CB Xàtiva competed in the sporting event, Carlos Martínez, Santiago Villanueva, José Luis Llopis, Juan Carlos Hintze, Julio Martín, Vicente Ferrer and Mª José Mompó. In addition to the seven podiums, the people from Setaba achieved five fifth places.

The gold came in the mixed doubles of the C2 category, where Juan Carlos Hintze was proclaimed champion of Spainforming a pair with Gloria Latorre (CB Collado Villalba), beating Bernardo Galmes and Mercè Llugany in the final by 21-14 and 21-11. Hintze added a bronze in the men’s doublesin which he formed a pair with Maximino Hernández from Murcia, after losing to Bernardo Galmes and Miguel Ángel Polo by a double 21-16.

In the B1 category, Mª José and Julio won silver in the mixed doublesafter losing in the final against the Andalusians Julio and Olalla Fernández by 21-16 and 25-23, leaving the Setabes runners-up in Spain. In category D, Santiago Villanueva and Mikel Rodríguez (CB Edumivi Gasteiz) placed third in the doubles, losing in the semifinals against José Ramírez and Miguel Vaz by 21-18 and 21-13. Santiago also placed fifth in singles, losing in the quarterfinals to Gabriel Villalonga by 21-12 and 21-18.

Carlos Martínez achieved three medals in the SV+ category. Individually he won bronzefalling in the semifinals against José Guerrero by 21-15, 24-26 and 21-16. In mixed doubles, in which she competed alongside Cristina Pastor, she achieved another bronze, after falling in the semifinals against José Mañana and Dolores Touriño by a tight 21-17 and 22-20. Finally, In the men’s doubles, Carlos and Ramón Quiroga won the silverafter losing in the decisive match against Roger Alexander Jackson and John Rae McGilvray.

In B1, Mª José Mompó placed fifth in singles, after losing in the quarterfinals against the number one seed of the tournament, Vanessa Serrano. The Setabense added another fifth place in the women’s doubles of the A2 category, in which she competed with Isabel Sáez (CB Las Torres), after losing in the quarterfinals against Isabel Maria Pina and Inmaculada Rojas by 21-17 and 21-18 . In B2, Vicente and Julio also placed fifth in the men’s doubles, losing in the quarterfinals to Alfons Beltrán and Abel Hernández, number one seeds, by 21-15 and 21-9.

In the C1 category, José Luis Llopis placed ninth in individual, where he was defeated by Luis Antonio Morcillo, who was finally champion, by 21-14 and 21-10. In men’s doubles, Llopis and the Andalusian Juan Arenas finished fifth after being defeated, again, by Morcillo and Álvaro Rangil by 21-15 and 21-14.
